Chapter 812
Chapter 812
Third Person’s POV
Alpha Zander cracked a grin. “Doug, you’ve got a point. That’s just the way things are supposed to be.”
In truth, he didn’t exactly have a choice, did he?

More than that, he was truly getting old. His wolf often felt frail these days, no longer fit to lead soldiers in holding the line at the Bloodscar border.
Luckily, the command was now in Russell’s hands.
This meant the fangs of the Doyles would continue to guard that land.
They drank until they were well and truly wasted.
As night fully descended and they prepared to head their separate ways, Cyrus gripped Zander’s arm tightly, letting out a heavy sigh.
“Listen. We might never get another chance to see each other again. Take care of yourself!”
“Let’s all take care of ourselves!”
Alpha Zander replied, slamming a fist against his chest in salute.
Even though he had downed buckets of strong spirits, he remained standing steady in the wind and snow, as immovable as a mountain.
Lance stood by, watching Doug and Cyrus depart. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Lisa holding Melinda’s hand tightly, looking at her with deep reluctance.
After Melinda said her goodbyes, she left under Georgia’s escort.
Lisa had also had a few drinks tonight, and the melancholy of parting was swirling in her chest.
Adelaide linked arms with her, walking her slowly back to her bedroom while speaking softly.
“I know you’re in no mood to unwrap parting gifts right now. If you don’t want to see them, just leave them be. It doesn’t matter if they pile up there forever. Wait until you’re in a better headspace. Right now, the most important thing is that you try to find some happiness for yourself.”
“I know, dear,” Lisa replied, her voice thick with emotion.
The evening lights made her white hair stand out even more clearly. It seemed that in the blink of an eye, she had aged ten years.
The next morning, Lance and Adelaide stood at the capital’s city gates, watching Alpha Zander and Lisa depart.
Behind them stretched a long line of wagons–all packed with high–grade herbal medicines and gifts for their kin at the border, meticulously prepared by Adelaide.
Adelaide grit her teeth, forcing back the tears, and worked hard to maintain a dignified smile.

It wasn’t until the massive convoy began to fade from view that she suddenly sprinted up the high city walls, her eyes tracking their retreating figures.
But before long, there was nothing left to see.
The dust kicked up by the road was quickly scattered by the cold wind.
Hot tears finally rolled down Adelaide’s cheeks.
Lance stepped up behind her, using a rough thumb to gently wipe away the moisture,
“Don’t be too sad, sweetheart,” he soothed in a low voice. “When we have some free time, we can take Cedric to visit them.”
Adelaide knew all too well that as high–ranking officials, it was nearly impossible for them to take leave at the same time to visit the border; such a move would likely trigger Lycan Erasmus‘ suspicion.
Still, Lance’s words made her wolf feel a little better, and she gave a small nod.
“We should head back,” Lance said, stretching his broad shoulders and squinting into the sun.
“You have to report to the Capital Guard today, and I have to head back to the Ministry of Justice to handle the fallout from the summit.”
He paused, a glint in his eye. “By the way, the Independent She–Wolf Center is officially operational. I think it’s time we put the plan for the she–wolf pup training camp on the agenda.”
Adelaide took a deep breath of the cool morning air, the lingering sadness and exhaustion vanishing instantly.
Her fighting spirit reignited, and she looked like a queen ready for battle.
“You’re absolutely right!”
The Independent She–Wolf Center was fully completed and ready to take in homeless she–wolves.
Harper, the mate of Elias Kell, had even hosted a high–profile afternoon tea to spread the word through the nobility.
Now, the whole city was buzzing with talk about it.
Strangely, however, not a single she–wolf had dared to step inside to ask for help.
Paisley was baffled. She and Wendy had conducted a secret investigation and found that many abandoned she–wolves in the capital were forced into the lowest, filthiest labor on the black market, trading a day’s work for a single bowl of soured food. Their lives were a living hell.
In early March, a patrol team pulled the body of a she–wolf from the river. An investigation confirmed she was an abandoned mate.
When Paisley heard the news, her wolf went wild; she stormed straight into the Capital Guard camp to find Adelaide.
Adelaide patted her shoulder reassuringly.
“Listen, Paisley, this was always going to be a challenge. They lack trust in the center, so no one wants to be the first to try. You have to understand–stepping through those doors is an admission that you’ve been discarded. Not every she–wolf can overcome that psychological barrier of shame.”

“But if they don’t come to us, do they think no one knows they’ve been abandoned anyway?!”
Paisley had poured a massive amount of time and energy into the center.

She had envisioned a safe haven where these women could pursue a better life, but she never imagined they would rather die than ask for help.
“Have a little patience, okay? We knew from the start this wouldn’t be an easy journey. We’re just getting started. And as for the woman who jumped into the river… she must have lost all hope in life to choose that end.”
“But staying alive is the most important thing! How could she be so foolish?”
Paisley tugged at her hair, clearly feeling discouraged.
