Ulrik froze in his tracks. “My resignation? What does that have to do with the Doyles?”

Fabian cursed him silently, thinking the man had grown incredibly dense.

“Think it through. You and the Doyles are both tied to the Snowdeer Town case. If you ‘voluntarily‘ resign now, does that mean they should automatically surrender their military command too? When you went to Snowdeer Town, whose orders were you following?”

Ulrik’s eyelids twitched violently.

“I… damn it. I didn’t think of that at all.”

“Then start thinking. Even if not for yourself, think of others. Don’t let your mere existence become a weight that drags everyone else down.”

Ulrik stared at him in shock. In his memory, Fabian was rarely this harsh or direct when reprimanding officials.

It took him a long while before he managed to rasp out, “Thank you for the reminder.”

Fabian continued, “Since Lycan Erasmus told you to reflect, go back to your territory and stay there. In a few days, report back to work on time.”

Ulrik gave a low word of affirmation and turned to leave.

Walking along the broad basalt slabs of the palace path, the morning fog had yet to lift, obscuring his direction–much like his confused and chaotic life.

For some reason, his mind drifted to Adelaide. On the night they got mated, he had received emergency orders to march to the Bloodscar border.

Adelaide had hugged him, her face soaked with tears, promising in a whisper against his chest that she would wait quietly for his triumphant return.

He had won the battle, but he had shattered her heart.

The mating bond flared with a tearing, dull ache that spread slowly from his sternum.

If only he could turn back time.

Tears slid uncontrollably down his face. He covered his face and knelt on the ground, his voice helpless as if speaking only to the wind on the plains.

“I wish I could kill myself… if the Moon Goddess gave me one chance to start over, I would use my life to protect you. I would never touch another she–wolf.”

That evening, Ellen accompanied Harriet to visit Paisley, bringing exquisite desserts for her, Lance, and Adelaide.

Usually, Harriet was all smiles, but today she kept glaring grumpily at Ellen.

Paisley, sensing the scent of gossip, asked with a grin, “Ellen, what did you do to make your mate this angry?”

Ellen waved his hands frantically.

“I didn’t do anything! I just went soft–hearted yesterday and brought Ulrik home for a drink. Harriet wasn’t pleased.”

“You invited him for a drink?” Paisley shot him a cold look.

“I didn’t realize you two were such close friends.”

Knowing Paisley disliked Ulrik because of Adelaide, Ellen quickly changed the subject.

“By the way, I heard Ulrik actually tried to hand in his resignation to Lycan Erasmus, but he got chewed out for it.”

Adelaide, who was sitting nearby, stiffened. She was instantly furious.

“He wants to resign? Now? At the most sensitive time possible?!”

“Don’t worry, Lycan Erasmus rejected his request,” Ellen added quickly.

Adelaide grit her teeth, her aura flaring out in a heavy wave.

“Has that bastard’s brain been chewed on by a dog?”

Paisley’s line of thinking was a bit different. She went silent for a moment, then tilted her head toward Adelaide.

“Could it be that he’s throwing a tantrum because he’s unhappy with Lycan Erasmus‘ punishment?”

Adelaide shot her a flat look of disbelief, and Paisley immediately backtracked.

“Okay, fine. Let’s just stop talking about that loser. Since Lycan Erasmus rejected the resignation, he should stay quiet for a while.”

Once the others had left, Paisley propped her chin on her hand and asked Adelaide, “Honestly, wouldn’t it be a good thing if he actually resigned? A coward like him doesn’t deserve to be Deputy Commander of the Royal Guard anyway.”

Adelaide sighed helplessly.

“Think about it. Right now, every wolf connected to the Bloodscar border is trying to keep a low profile. If Ulrik jumps out and starts shouting about resigning, doesn’t that just drag everyone’s attention right back to the massacre?”

“Yeah, you’re right. But would that actually cause trouble?”

“Germain has been trying to kick the Doyles out of the Bloodscar border for years. The Snowdeer tragedy is a massive point of contention in both nations. I’d bet anything that Germain is fanning those flames behind the scenes. The King’s punishment was a clever way to shield Russell and the others. It was a huge mercy. If Ulrik does this, he’s giving Germain the perfect handle to smash the military merit and reputation the Doyles has spent decades building.”

Paisley stared at Adelaide, unable to find a word to say for a long time.

Her wolf felt a surge of complex, bittersweet emotion. Ever since they reunited on the battlefield, this strange feeling had been surfacing often, and she hadn’t quite figured out what it was.

During their years training in the Shadow Peaks, Paisley always felt Adelaide was only slightly better at combat than she was.

When it came to experience, worldliness, and insight into national affairs, Paisley was convinced she far surpassed her.
