Chapter 874

Third Person’s POV

Gloria’s face turned pale for a moment; Utrik’s words in the middle of the night frightened her.

However, she simply turned away in disgust.

“Enough. She brought this on herself. What does it have to do with you? Go to sleep.”

Ulrik threw off the covers and stepped barefoot onto the floor. “You sleep, I can’t. I’m going to the study.”

Gloria suddenly sat up in bed.

“You sneak off to the study every night. How do you think those servants in the pack see me? They’re whispering that you don’t love me at all!”

He gripped the edge of the bed, barely steadying himself. Gloria’s words sank into his mind, making him unbearably irritated.

But he couldn’t bother to explain to her now. His thoughts were consumed by Velda’s final screams, echoing endlessly in his head.

He hurriedly pushed the door open and walked out.

At some point, it had started to rain outside, pounding on the roof with a sharp, crackling sound. Rainwater streamed down the eaves in glistening lines.

The corridor was empty, the ceiling lights cast a harsh white glow, throwing his shadow onto the wall-sometimes swelling into a wild beast, sometimes dissolving into something ghostly and formless.

The sound of wind mixed with the rain, like a whole pack of wolves howling on the wilderness, eerily similar to the terrified cries he heard in his dream.

He had intended to go to the study, but before he realized it, he found himself standing in the small courtyard where Velda used to

live.

When he pushed open the door, he was already soaked through by the rain.

It had only been a month or two since Velda was captured and detained, yet the courtyard was already completely abandoned. No one came to clean or maintain it anymore.

The entire courtyard was pitch black, with only a bit of light leaking in from the streetlamp outside the wall, barely illuminating a few clumps of overgrown wild grass.

He stood in the middle, looking up at Velda’s old bedroom. The door was closed.

In the past, whenever he entered, Velda would sense his presence and open the door from inside.

She would cross her arms, lean casually against the doorframe, and tease him with a careless smile,

“Hey, my mate. You actually remember the way to find me?”

Now, there was nothing behind the door.

+His inner wölf suddenly fell silent, but the pain in his chest remained, as if a massive wound had been carved into him and we never heal.

He couldn’t tell if the dull ache in his chest was from losing her, from remorse, or…from the relief of finally being rid of her.

The three feelings mixed together, leaving him able to distinguish them.

He didn’t know if Velda was truly dead.

But that dream felt too real, more vivid than any dream he had experienced before.

In the dream, he clearly saw her head roll down, those unfocused eyes staring ahead, full of terror and despair.

On that severed head, her mouth moved slightly, and judging by the shape, she was calling his name.

Did he ever love her?

Rain poured into his open mouth. He didn’t know; he wasn’t even sure he understood what love meant.

After returning from the Bloodscar border war, he stood before Adelaide with reddened eyes and told her that he had never understood love before. It was only after meeting Velda that he finally felt the true pull of the mate bond.

Back then, he truly believed it. Every time he held Velda’s hand, his wolf would roar, his heart would race, and an intense desire would surge through him. His wolf yearned for her, wanted to claim her as its mate, and announce to the entire world that she belonged to him.

Truthfully, Velda wasn’t the most beautiful, nor was she as elegant and gentle as Adelaide, but her wildness constantly drove his

wolf wild.

Was that love?

And what about Adelaide?

The thought stabbed into his heart like a dagger coated in silver poison.

Drained, he sank to his knees in the cold, muddy grass.

Whenever he thought of Adelaide, his heart hurt as if it would split in two.

He remembered the night after completing the bonding ceremony, when she shyly and obediently bared the smooth skin of her

neck.

At that moment, he felt like the luckiest alpha in the world.
