DEFECTED HEART
that means you guys are dating now?” Kaia asked as she reaches for another diced apple from the plate between us with her fork.
I couldn’t stop the smile that spread across my face as I pick up a piece of apple of my own and took a bite. “Kinda.”
She paused and slowly turns to look at me, “Is it kinda or yes? Which one is which?” she demanded, “I
need to know.”
Chuckling as my fave heats up, “Yes.”
Her face immediately lit up. “Thank God!”
A laugh tore from my throat at this, “He was so possessive,” I added, shaking my head, “I honestly didn’t know he had it in him.”
“Well, thank God for that too,” she grins, “Now I can finally stop watching you walk around all depressed and sorrowful.”
Grabbing the nearest pillow, I threw it at her. “I wasn’t depressed!”
Catching the pillow effortlessly and placing it against her chest before scoffed. “Please, you were moping around like the world had come to an end for the past two weeks,” she says then tosses the pillow back onto the bed, pointing to my face, “And now look at you, smiling again.”
I rolled my eyes, but the smile refused to leave my lips, causing her to shake her head, “Thank goodness it’s over, your depression was starting to slip into me.”
“Kaia!”
“What?” she said innocently, reaching for another piece of apple, “I’m just saying.”
My lips cast down as I pout slightly, “You’re being mean.”
“You’ll be fine,” she laughs, picking up another piece of apple and popped it into her mouth, “Besides, I seriously doubt anything I say right now could wipe that smile off your face.”
Letting out a soft chuckled, “True, true,” the smiles stretches in my lips, “I love love.” Kaia slowly turns to look at me, the expression on her face made me laugh, “What?” I asked.
“What happened to you?” she stares at me like I had suddenly grown two heads, “Where is my best friend? The one who used to roll her eyes at anything remotely mushy and acted like catching feelings was a personal attack?”
Shrugging my shoulders, still smiling, “She’s still here, just in love.”
She burst out laughing. “Wow,” shaking her head in disbelief, but there was a smile tugging at the corners of her lips, “I have to admit, it’s actually kind of refreshing seeing you like this.”
“I know, right?” I grinned, feeling ridiculously giddy and she shakes her head again, clearly trying, and failing, to hide her smile, then her expression softened.

“And I’m really glad about Leo too,” she says changing the subject and my smile fades slightly as I listened, “He finally got the heart surgery he needed, and now he gets a chance to actually live a decent life. He gets
do all the things kids his age should be doing.”
“Yeah,” I nodded.
“I’m really happy for him.”
I had talked to Caelum and asked if it was okay to tell Kaia about Leo, and he has given me permission to tell her everything, including what had happened with Leo. He said his brother’s condition had never exactly been a secret, and he had never hidden it because he was ashamed of it. He simply hadn’t wanted people to know because he didn’t want Leo or his family to receive pity.
Now that Leo was finally recovering, he didn’t mind Kaia knowing.m
Kaia suddenly looked at me, “Would it be okay if I came with you when you go see Leo?”
“Of course,” I could already picture it, “Leo would be glad to see you. And honestly, I know you two are going to click,” she grins as the silence fell between us till something popped up in my head, and I clicked my fingers, “Oh, right, I almost forgot to ask.”
“What?” she raised an eyebrow.
“How’s it going with Mason?” her expression immediately changes and I pointed at her, “Don’t even try to act innocent, I’ve seen the way you two are at school.”
She laughed. “You’re imagining things.”
“Am I?” I gave her a knowing look, “Because from where I’m standing, you two seem pretty interested in each other. And you’re constantly texting.”
Before she could respond, her phone suddenly pinges. In looked at it, then back at her, smirking “I bet that’s Mason.”
