No matter how clever Charlotte was, she couldn't have guessed that Jack and Wilhelmina were bound by an old-fashioned betrothal arranged before birth.
Since she couldn't figure it out, Jack certainly wasn't going to explain. He simply gave a cool, dismissive reply.
"We sort of know each other. That's all."
"Oh." Charlotte didn't buy it, but seeing that Jack wasn't willing to elaborate, she didn't press further. From the look of resentment in Wilhelmina's eyes earlier, it was clear their relationship was beyond saving.
When Jack made Wilhelmina kneel, Charlotte couldn't help but feel strangely satisfied.
They soon shifted the conversation to Jack's incredible performance in both gaming and pool earlier. Charlotte already knew he was insanely skilled in both, but seeing it with her own eyes always left her a little breathless.
The match just now was absolutely thrilling.
Neil couldn't help but start begging Jack to teach him how to play pool. It was the kind of timeless skill that never went out of style. If he could get even half as good as Jack, he figured girls would be throwing themselves at him.
The group was chatting animatedly when, suddenly, the sound of footsteps echoed across the dark street.
A large group of people was approaching. At the front were Nelson, Wilhelmina, and Cody. Behind them was an army of bodyguards, at least 20 strong, all tall and powerfully built.
Coming from wealthy families, Nelson, Wilhelmina, and Cody were no strangers to personal security. Their bodyguards had been waiting downstairs the whole time while they were upstairs playing games. Hence, they were unaware that a fight had broken out.
How could Nelson and the others possibly let things slide after suffering from such humiliation?
But Ian and Myra weren't aware of Jack's fighting skills. They came from more sheltered upbringings, and the idea of someone coming after them with a squad of bodyguards genuinely scared them.
Seeing the fear in their eyes, Mona tried to reassure them, "Don't worry. Jack's here."
Myra widened her eyes in curiosity. "Is he really that good?"
She'd already seen Jack's almost supernatural skill in gaming and pool. But it was hard to imagine that he was also good at fighting.
Neil couldn't resist bragging, "Do you know those movies where one guy takes on ten? Jack can take on 50."
Myra and Ian looked at Jack with newfound admiration.
