Helen’s expression darkened. “Joseph, where did you get these pictures? Did you fabricate them yourself to slander Cora?”

Joseph let out a cold laugh. “That’s rich. You’re clearly not senile yet, but you’re talking like someone who is. If you were acting this intimately with another man, what do you think Bernard would do?”

“You…” Helen was completely speechless.

Joseph said, “I’ll say it one more time. Tell Cora to just agree to the divorce. As for compensation, everything is negotiable. But if she really wants to do it the hard way, then we can. But if that happens, then I’ll squeeze everything I can out of the divorce!”

Joseph stood up and stared at Helen. “I know the Lowells are very influential, and so are the Yorks, but there’s still such a thing as right and wrong. I refuse to believe your families can just do whatever they want to. You still care about your reputation, don’t you?”

Helen’s eyes widened. “Are you threatening me?”

Joseph scoffed. “If someone like me can threaten people like you with a few words, then that says more about your insecurity than my abilities. Why are you glaring at me? If you can, go confront the man fooling around with Cora. What’s the point of bullying someone like me?”

Helen shouted, “Get lost!”

As he reached the front gate of the house, he glanced back and saw a figure standing silently behind a second-floor window.

It was Selena.

“Selena, you’re a good girl. You’re smart, obedient, and strong-willed. It’s not that I don’t want to come upstairs and see you. But what would it change? Cora had you with another man. You have a father of your own, so what am I?”

Joseph felt a wave of bitterness wash over him as he got into his car and drove away.

Back home, Joseph stood outside for a long moment. The lights were dim, so he knew Cora hadn’t returned. Once upon a time, this had been his favorite place in the world.

He had a beautiful, capable wife, healthy, obedient children, and a family that never worried about money.

They seemed like the happiest family in Jenton. But what about now? His wife was away with another man, and the children were scattered. The family had fallen apart before the divorce papers were even signed. The house no longer felt like home.

With a sigh, he walked inside.
