A Man with Nerves of Steel (Joseph Hart) novel Chapter 142

Chapter 142

After soothing Kimberly to sleep, Cora went upstairs and entered Selena’s room. Selena was sitting on her bed reading, or at least pretending to. Just one glance at that upside-down book in her hand was enough for Cora to realize that Selena wasn’t reading a single word.

Cora asked, “Selena, what’s wrong? If something’s troubling you, tell me, okay?”

“Mom, I’m fine. I’m just tired. I want to sleep, so just go talk to Grandma.” Selena lay down and closed her eyes to sleep.

Cora was silent for a moment before she said, “How about I take you all back to the house with Dad? Let’s go. I won’t let you stay apart from Dad anymore. I won’t go on any more business trips either. I’ll stay at home with you.”

Selena yawned exaggeratedly. “No need. I have school tomorrow, and I’m too tired to move.”

Before long, she appeared to have fallen asleep.

Cora knew perfectly well that Selena was only pretending, but she chose not to expose her.

Quietly, Cora stood up and left the room, gently closing the door behind her.

“Where are you going, Dad?” Cora asked when she saw that Bernard was about to head out.

“That ungrateful brat has gotten too full of himself. Is he even ignoring the children now? I’m going to properly settle the score with him. Otherwise, he’ll start getting too arrogant,” Bernard said.

Bernard’s anger had been building for days after he found out that Joseph was ignoring calls and the children. Joseph had even left two girls stranded at school without bothering to pick them up. On top of that, Kimberly was in such a bad state, and Helen was adding oil to the flames.

“Come back right now! You’re not to cause any trouble for Joseph!” Cora said sharply, leaving no room for argument.

When Bernard put down the keys, Cora said gently, “Dad, you’ve been travelling all day. Get some rest. As for Joseph, I’ll handle him later.”

Bernard sighed and went to his room.

Moments later, Helen appeared. Without a word, she led Cora into the study and shut the door. “Cora, I warned you before that you’d have to make a choice sooner or later, but you didn’t listen. And now you’ve made a mess of everything. Look at these.”
