Despite that, the fact that Cora and Warren had gone to a hot spring resort together was enough to convince him that something was going on between them. No matter how convincing this woman sounded, he couldn’t fully trust her.

When she hesitated to answer, Joseph continued, “You might claim that you’re Warren’s mistress, but his wife is at the hospital right now. The hospital has to release his personal effects to her. Otherwise, the hospital will be held liable if she causes a scene.

“Besides, how do I know you’re not planning to use the phone for something illegal? If that happens and an investigation happens down the line, I’ll be dragged right into it.”

The mistress clenched her jaw, her calculated demeanor cracking before she finally told the truth.

“Warren promised to leave some money for Charles and me. Now that he’s fallen and suffered a brain injury, I’m terrified he’ll wake up with amnesia and forget what he promised.

“If that happens, our future will be at risk. There’s a number stored in his phone that is the password to a bank account. I need it to access the money.”

Joseph studied her for a moment and decided to believe her for the time being. He took down her contact information before heading up to the inpatient ward to make the arrangements.

Fortunately, Warren’s phone truly was a relic. Jennifer hadn’t cared for it and left it in a bag with his personal belongings. Joseph arranged for the mistress to disguise herself as a nurse and cleverly distracted the caregivers. Then, she quickly memorized the numbers she needed.
