Chapter 264
Cora immediately turned back to look for Joseph, but there was no sign of him anywhere. The next time she heard anything about him, he was already back at the hospital for work.
She immediately called him. “Where were you last night?”
“Where I go is none of your business. But if you insist on an answer, then I’ll tell you this-I went looking for Natalie’s biological father. I’ve changed my mind. I’m done wishing the two of you well. I’m going to find that bastard and make him pay.”
“That’s complete nonsense! Nat and the other two are your children!”
“Cora, don’t make me cuss you out! You can play dumb all you want, but I’m not an idiot! If I couldn’t even reada, damn DNA test report, I’d have no business being a doctor.
“Since you won’t tell me, I’ll find him myself! And when I do, both you and him are going to pay!”
“Fine! Then I’ll wait for you to find him, because I’d love to know who it is too! I simply don’t buy it. How could I have someone else’s children when you’re the only man I’ve ever been with? How does that make any sense?”
“You won’t be singing that tune anymore once the truth comes out. When that day comes, you’ll regret not taking the chance I gave you to come clean! I’ve said all I need to say. Don’t contact me again. We go our separate ways from here.”
“Let’s put our problems aside for now. What about Yasmin? Where is she? What did you do to her last night?”
“She’s in the hospital. She got wasted last night and suffered alcohol poisoning. And she’s on an IV drip right now. Once the people here find out you’re working with her, they’ll probably think less of you. You’d better watch yourself.”
Just then, Joseph’s desk phone rang. It was a call from the emergency department. He hung up on Cora, answered the call, and took off to resuscitate the patient.
The ICU saw critical and emergency cases every single day, and at the end of the day, he was still a doctor. He couldn’t just stand by and let someone die without trying to save them.
The patient they brought in was in the late stages of lung cancer. A metastasized tumor had suddenly ruptured a blood vessel near the windpipe, causing blood to gush from his mouth and nose. He was in critical condition.
By the time Joseph and the team stabilized the patient, Joseph’s scrubs and arms were covered in blood. He wanted to tell the family it might be time to stop treatment, but the patient was only 40 years old, and the patient’s wife, who was waiting outside, was pregnant on top of that.
In the end, he simply couldn’t say it and instead did everything he could to prolong the man’s life.
This was terminal cancer they were dealing with, and Joseph wasn’t a miracle worker. A cure was out of the question, but he was confident he could extend the patient’s life by another six months, a year, or maybe even longer.
Joseph had barely finished comforting the family when Dave came looking for him. He was needed in the neurointensive care unit. Kyle was having another episode.
After running blood tests and analyzing the results, Joseph determined that Kyle had once again taken the drug that induced extreme agitation, causing him to display psychotic symptoms.
Joseph managed to stabilize him once again and restored his mental clarity. He warned Kyle, “Stop taking random

medication. If you keep overworking your body, you’ll die.
“All drugs carry a degree of toxicity. You need to be careful.”
Kyle immediately turned to the police officers beside him. “Did you hear that? He just admitted that he gave me poison! He’s trying to kill me with poison! Arrest him!”
One of the officers replied, “You seem perfectly coherent now. Weren’t you just calling us useless pieces of trash? Looks like you need us after all. Since that’s the case, come back with us and give a proper statement. The law may seem slow, but no one escapes it.”
After witnessing Joseph save Kyle’s life, the police had nothing but respect and gratitude for Joseph. Arresting him was the last thing on their minds.
This was a legitimate hospital, and every medication used was part of a treatment plan agreed upon by a team of experts. Joseph had absolutely zero opportunity to poison anyone.
