Natalie immediately asked Joseph, “Are you telling the truth? Am I really a Zahn? Who’s my father?”
Joseph replied, “This is all I managed to uncover so far. Ask Cora. If anyone’s going to tell you, it’ll be her. But Natalie, you’re already vain enough as it is.”
After that, he ended the call. Lighting another cigarette, Joseph started to feel a little regretful. He should have collected some DNA samples from Barry. Blood would have been ideal. With that, he could run a DNA test.
If Natalie and her sisters truly were Barry’s children, then at least that question would finally be answered. After that, all that would remain was to see how Cora planned on explaining herself.
At the moment, Cora was fully occupied dealing with the fallout from the fire at the Lowell Group. She simply didn’t have the time to come looking for Joseph.
Late that night, Joseph received a message from Belinda. Soon, they spoke over the phone.
Joseph asked, “Aren’t you with Barry?”
Belinda chuckled. “I’m not his only woman. Besides, he won’t be touching me for a while. Are you at the hospital or at home? Why don’t we grab a drink together?”
Joseph refused without any hesitation, saying, “I was actually hoping you’d be with Barry. I need you to get something of his for me. A blood sample would be best, because I want to run a paternity test.”
Belinda was a little surprised. “You think Barry’s slept with Cora?”
But after a moment, Belinda realized there was nothing to be surprised about. Barry had the nerve to sleep with
anyone.
Joseph admitted, “I don’t know. I can’t be certain of anything yet. Until I can identify the man, everyone’s a possibility. But Cora’s isn’t the type to sleep around. If she chose someone, he’d have to be more powerful than her, and especially me. He has to have the family influence and background that I lack.”
Belinda sighed. “Hearing you say that actually makes me feel sorry for you. You’re a good doctor and a good person, but reality has twisted you into this. My heart almost aches for you. Come out and let me comfort you.”
Joseph replied calmly, “I don’t need comforting. Just focus on your own job. Right, Cora is doing everything she can to track down whoever started that fire. She has some very capable people working for her. Will you be exposed? If you are, have you figured out what you’ll do?”
Belinda answered confidently, “I’m not worried. But if I’m really exposed, I’ll simply tell her you were involved too. I’ll insist that you were the mastermind, and I simply acted on your instructions. Either way, the attention will end up on you.”
Joseph laughed. “You really are a bitch.”
Then, he hung up.
That night, Joseph lay awake considering the possibility that everything came to light. After a lot of thought, he arrived at one conclusion. As long as Belinda hadn’t secretly recorded their conversations, he would just deny everything.
The following day, Joseph had just stepped out of the emergency room when Mason summoned him.
Outside the elevator, Mason’s secretary was already waiting. She lowered her voice and said, “Dr. Hart, it’s about

Kyle’s death. Someone wants to investigate you.”
Joseph frowned. “Is it the police again?”
When was this going to end?
