Was Jenna deliberately provoking Joseph to make him slip up?

Joseph knew exactly what she was doing. The two locked gazes for a moment, then Joseph smiled. He dismissed her from his Inind and acted as if she didn’t exist. Then, he turned on his computer and continued working.

Jenna watched him organize medical records for a while. He also replied to emails from doctors, answered clinical questions, and helped solve difficult cases.

She frowned. “You’re wasting your time doing this. With your position as associate chief physician of the ICU department and your place in the hospital’s medical team, you shouldn’t be handling all this.”

Joseph casually replied, “Then what do you think I should be doing?”

Joseph nodded. “You’re right, so don’t mention it again.”

Then, Joseph called Paige into the office, assigned several tasks, and went to look for Dave.

Jenna quickly grew bored when she saw they were discussing only administrative matters unrelated to medicine. So, she left.

The moment she was gone, Joseph cursed, “Does she really have that much influence? Can’t we just get rid of her?

Dave smiled helplessly. “There’s a lot more involved than you think. Keeping her here will probably cause less trouble for the hospital than offending her. Why don’t you just assign her a patient? If she’s busy treating someone, she won’t have time to follow you around.”

Dave had already reported Joseph’s complaints to senior management, but Mason and the others rejected all the complaints. Mason’s position was clear. Jenna was a special case who had unrestricted access to the ICU, and the ICU department was expected to cooperate fully.

Joseph said, “She doesn’t treat patients. She works for the Zahn family and only treats members of their family. The only reason she’s here is to make my life difficult.

“Kyle belonged to the Zahns. They’d planned on declaring Kyle medically insane, but I exposed the plan. That’s why they’re upset now.”

Dave then suggested, “If things are quiet in the ICU department, maybe you should take a few days off. You could always just try to avoid the situation for now.”

Dave found this situation troublesome. Joseph had clearly done nothing wrong, yet he was being targeted for refusing to yield to the Zahns. Of course, he respected Joseph as well. The fact that the Zahns had their sights on him meant that Joseph was a capable person.

Joseph shook his head. “That’s not necessary. If she earned the title of Miracle Doctor at such a young age, she must have some real talent. Perhaps I could learn a thing or two from her.”

When Joseph returned to the department, he ordered lunch, making sure to order some for Jenna as well. She accepted it without the slightest hesitation.

As they ate, Joseph poured her a glass of water. When he noticed the sweat that was forming across her forehead, he said, “So you can’t handle spicy food. Still, you must be quite the masochist if you keep eating it.”

Jenna drank the water and glared at him. “You’re the one who’s a masochist!”

Joseph shrugged and simply returned to work. Not long after that, he saw Jenna slumped in her chair, fast asleep. She was even snoring.

He walked over and tried to wake her up, but she didn’t respond. He quickly pulled out a needle and did some acupuncture to deepen her sleep.

She had Paige find a blanket for Jenna, then he headed to the ICU department to start treating patients.
