Joseph scoffed. “Drugged you? Can you be a bit more specific?”

He glanced at Jenna. “The Zahns may treat you like a princess, but I won’t! You may be valuable to them, but that doesn’t make you valuable to me. We’re in the same profession, so we’re natural rivals. You should at least know that much.”

Joseph could tell from her expression that there was no real malice behind her words. She might have a sharp tongue, but she wasn’t a cruel person.

“You did it, but you don’t have the guts to admit it? You’re not a man!” Jenna pointed at Joseph.

Joseph smiled faintly. “Jenna, you helped me understand something today. As long as someone seizes the moral high ground first, they think they can criticize everyone else while remaining untouchable. That’s exactly what you’re doing.”

Jenna protested, “No, I’m not doing that.”

Joseph replied, “But you are. Why did you come here? Because you suspect that I killed Kyle, a member of your family. Isn’t that right?”

Jenna nodded. “That’s right. You will take responsibility for Kyle’s death. You can deny it all you want, but even without evidence, I know it’s you.”

Joseph scoffed. “See? You’ve already decided that I’m guilty in your own mind. You’re just trying to play the part of a righteous judge. Listen carefully, this is a society governed by law, and the Zahn family is part of that society,

too.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s Kyle or another member of your family. If they committed crimes in the past and escaped punishment, that doesn’t mean they stood above the law. It only means no one pursued the matter. But this time, the law stepped in. And the law catches up with everyone eventually.”

Jenna immediately realized what he was implying, so she shot back, “Then if you killed Kyle, why hasn’t the law punished you?”

Joseph answered, “Evidence! If you have evidence that I harmed him, I wouldn’t be able to avoid whatever punishment the law imposes. I wouldn’t try to run away, either.”

He sat down and looked at Jenna. “The same applies to you. If I catch you breaking the law while you’re at the hospital, I won’t go easy on you either.”

Jenna fell silent.

Joseph continued, “I know you have a powerful background. You can throw your weight around in the hospital, but you shouldn’t forget one thing. Even the people protecting you will have to answer to the law if they break it. Rules exist for everyone.”

Joseph pointed toward the office door. “You’re officially assigned to the ICU department now. This isn’t your workstation, so leave. There are rules you should adhere to while you’re here!”

Jenna clenched her fists. “Just you wait. You’ll fall into my hands someday!”

Jenna realized that Joseph was acting differently from the day before. It was obvious that Joseph no longer respected her after getting the better of her. In fact, she was probably nothing special to him anymore.

Then Joseph frowned when he saw Cora calling. He had Paige leave before he stood up and answered the call. “If you have something to say, say it quickly. I’m busy.”

Cora said, “One of your female colleagues came over yesterday. She claimed she was going to deal with you. Did you offend her somehow?”
