Marla still refused to come back, but of course Joseph couldn’t just stand by and let people die. He cured the patients of their poison so they wouldn’t die, but he didn’t go all out. He didn’t use acupuncture to stimulate their life force and wake them up.

After days of treatment, Natalie had fully recovered. Joseph arranged for her discharge. As they stood in the underground parking garage, she asked, “Dad, aren’t you coming back with us?”

“Stay at home and rest now that you’re discharged. Don’t overthink things, and don’t stick your nose into other people’s business.”

Joseph knew that even after being discharged, Natalie wouldn’t be going back to school yet. Following the poisoning incident at the school, an investigation was launched to determine the cause. Classes wouldn’t resume until everything was fully cleared up.

Natalie didn’t say anything more, especially when she saw Cora walking over. She got into the car first.

“Honey, we’re lucky we had you. Otherwise, Nat wouldn’t have recovered so soon. To celebrate her discharge, let’s all go home together,” Cora said, reaching out to take Joseph’s arm. He brushed her off.

“You two are a family, and I’m not part of it. What does any of this have to do with me?” With that, he turned and walked into the elevator.

Cora didn’t want to let him go so easily and wanted to follow him in, but with Natalie still sitting in the car behind her, she had no choice but to give up.

In the car, she looked Natalie over. The latter’s face had filled out a little after her time in the hospital. She’d clearly put on some weight.

“Your dad really knows how to take care of you,” Cora said.

“It’s a shame you’ve never appreciated him. You’re about to lose him, and you’re making us lose him, too.” Natalie had seen how Cora and Joseph had interacted. She wasn’t a child anymore; she could read between the lines and tell what Joseph meant.

She went on, “Poor Dad. You betrayed him, and Grandma and Grandpa don’t like him. Even I used to think he wasn’t that great. All of us have done him wrong.”

“What nonsense are you

“Are you still going to deny it? What’s the point? Mom, you can’t use how Dad used to love us as leverage to guilt- trip him. You need to face reality! Now that everything’s out in the open, you owe Dad an explanation.”

“I don’t need you to teach me how to live my life!” Cora snapped.

“If you’re gonna act like some almighty parent, then is there anything left for us to talk about?” Natalie retorted.

She turned to look out the window. She closed her eyes, but her mind drifted to Joseph.

Cora wasn’t in a good mood, either. According to her plan, she’d wanted to use Natalie’s discharge to lure Joseph back home. After that, she had a whole playbook of moves ready to make Joseph believe she loved him; she wanted to smooth over whatever misunderstandings they had.

Back at the villa, Cora saw that Jonas was waiting for her. She told Natalie to head inside first so she could speak to Jonas alone.

She said, “Nat’s already been discharged. Isn’t it obvious enough? Send Mia to Jenton University Hospital so my husband can treat her. Right now, in all of Jenton, he’s the only one who can handle this kind of poisoning.”

“Jenton University Hospital is too unpredictable. Besides, Joseph is already suspicious about you and me. Won’t I be putting myself at his mercy if I send my daughter straight into his hands?” Jonas protested.
