Joseph stayed at the hospital. He had no desire to leave. After all, this was where he had the most authority. As long as patients were in the hospital—especially once they were in the ICU-their life and death were in his hands.

That day, he asked Katie to come over before waking Kenneth up.

Kenneth stared blankly at the ceiling. Only when he saw Katie and Joseph did he finally feel like he was still alive. His tears immediately began to fall.

He said, “Katie, I missed you. Joseph, I missed you, too. I love you. I love you both so much!”

Katie frowned in confusion and asked Joseph, “Did he… Did his brain get damaged or something?”

“Looks like it to me.” Joseph was also puzzled.

The treatment had gone smoothly, and Kenneth’s body showed no obvious problems, yet his behavior was so out of character. Had his nerves been damaged somehow? Did this poison have a side effect that attacked the brain and nervous system?

Kenneth said, “I’m perfectly sane, thank you. Katie, Joseph, how long was I out this time?”

“Not long,” Katie said. She let out a long breath of relief now that Kenneth was awake.

“Not long? Why does it feel like at least three years have gone by?”

He didn’t believe her. After checking the calendar and confirming that only a few days had passed, he turned to Joseph. “While I was out, I felt like I was locked in a tiny, pitch-black room with no light at all. It was terrifying. Joseph, you were that single ray of light. You were the one who pulled me out and woke me up!”

Joseph grew curious and asked Kenneth to describe the experience in more detail. This gave him a whole new angle on how to counter certain types of medical attacks.

Then, he asked, “Besides being poisoned by your own concoction, you were also hit with another kind of poison. How did it happen? Do you remember anything at all?”

“I was poisoned by something else, too?” Kenneth thought back. Suddenly, his eyes bulged, and his pupils shrank. He shook his head. “It couldn’t have been her. There’s no way she’d betray me!”

“Who?” Katie immediately pressed.

“Lily Schmidt. If anyone could’ve slipped me something, it must’ve been when I went to her place for dinner. Otherwise, there’s no way anyone could’ve gotten close enough to poison me.

“That night, she suddenly invited me over to her house for food and drinks, but she normally never cooks at home. She has a small bar counter there, and she mixed me a cocktail. I remember thinking it tasted awful-that must’ve been what she spiked it with. Joseph, what kind of poison is this? Can you cure me?”

“If he couldn’t, you wouldn’t be awake and talking right now, would you? And Lily Schmidt? I told you you couldn’t handle that woman, but you refused to listen! Now look-she’s nailed you good this time, hasn’t she?” Katie scolded, then turned to Joseph. “Joseph, do you know what kind of poison this is?”

“It has a certain stimulating effect on the nervous system. I’ll need to do more research to find out how exactly it attacks and what kind of damage it can cause, though. This is my first time encountering it, so I don’t actually know what it’s called.
