Joseph said evenly, “I’m sorry, but I can’t help you. You should ask someone else.”

He hadn’t expected Shirley to be Jonas’ wife, and he certainly hadn’t expected her to come begging him in person. Still, he rejected her bluntly.

Shirley was taken aback. She quickly said, “I didn’t even say what I wanted help with. How can you refuse me already?”

“I have no personal ties to you, and we don’t have any shared interests. You don’t need to beg me for anything because I can’t help you anyway. You’re part of the Towne family. If you’re sick, go get someone else to treat you.”

Joseph asked security to come in and escort Shirley out.

“Joseph, I’m begging you. Please save my daughter, Mia!” Shirley hadn’t expected Joseph to give her zero room to bargain or to have security throw her out just like that.

Jonas sat in the car in the hospital’s underground parking garage. When Shirley got in, he asked, “What did Joseph say? Did he agree to save Mia?”

“He didn’t even give me a chance to speak. As soon as I said I was your wife, he kicked me out. He said he wouldn’t save anyone from the Towne family. What on earth did you do to offend him?”

The more Shirley thought about how bluntly Joseph had rejected her, the more resentful she felt.

“I have no grudge against him. I’ve barely even met him a few times. How could I have offended him?” Jonas muttered.

“Jonas, be honest with me. Did you sleep with Joseph’s wife, Cora?” Shirley suddenly asked.

She wasn’t utterly deaf. Joseph’s daughters weren’t his by blood, and she knew that Jonas and Cora were close. She had every reason to suspect that the girls were Jonas’ kids.

“I didn’t! I’ve always been faithful to you. I’ve never betrayed you!” Jonas cried.

“What’s the point of swearing loyalty to me? I only got together with you after you and Cora were over, anyway. I’m not gonna get jealous over whatever happened between you two.

“Right now, the question is how you’re going to get Joseph to save Mia. Even your father might end up needing Joseph to step in.” Shirley saw the shifty look on Jonas’ face and knew something had definitely happened between him and Cora.

None of Cora’s three children were Joseph’s by blood, which meant she wasn’t exactly some paragon of virtue. So what was the big deal if she had slept with Jonas, too?

“Joseph is a doctor. How can he just reject you like that? Sounds like he doesn’t want his job at this hospital anymore. I’ll have him thrown out right away!” Jonas’ face hardened.

“Oh, enough already. Know when to stop. If you kick Joseph out, he’ll just leave Jenton and go to those big shots in Croma. Who will you count on to save Mia then? If the things I say still hold any weight in your heart, then go talk to Joseph yourself.

“If you slept with his wife, then apologize and compensate him accordingly. Swallow your pride and humble yourself if you need to,” Shirley said. She’d met plenty of men, but someone like Joseph was a first for her.
