A team of experts from the state authorities arrived. They asked Joseph to give a detailed explanation of how he had detoxified the mass poisoning at the girls’ high school. It was a political task.

Joseph knew perfectly well this was a ploy by the Zahn and Towne families to pry the treatment plan out of him- or maybe Jenna needed inspiration for her own treatment approach. So he just went by the book, reciting dry, overused theory in an equally dry tone.

Halfway through, one of the experts, who clearly had no idea what he was listening to, asked, “Dr. Hart, could you put this in simpler terms? That way everyone can really understand it.”

Joseph didn’t argue. He simply repeated the toxicology conclusion they had reached during the consultation-the poison had entered the body and damaged the heart and kidneys. That had, in turn, fed back to the brain’s central nervous system and triggered the body’s self-defense mechanism, causing the patient to lose consciousness.

The expert still looked dissatisfied, but Joseph stopped bothering with him. He found an excuse to toss the problem to the hospital director, then went back to his department to study medical techniques and ways to counter them.

Near the end of the workday, Shirley showed up again. She knocked, came in, and asked Joseph, “Joseph, what do you want me to do before you’ll agree to save my daughter?”

“Why are you here again? You Townes and the Zahns are in this together. Since Jenna wants to have a medical competition with me, I shouldn’t be accepting any of her patients. Go and beg her-I’m sure she’ll figure something out.

“If she doesn’t make an effort, that just means she doesn’t want to save your daughter. But maybe she’ll cave if you keep pleading with her.”

Joseph called security, not wanting to waste another word on Shirley.

“Joseph, I’ll get on my knees for you. I’m begging you! Mia’s heart stopped just now. If you don’t save her now, it’ll be too late!” Shirley dropped to her knees in front of Joseph.

Neither Joseph nor the security guards outside had ever seen anything like this. This was modern society, after all.

Joseph had Paige come in and help Shirley back to her feet. Then, as Shirley watched, he called Jenna and told her to transfer Mia over.

Once the security guards and Paige left, Joseph said to Shirley, “I don’t know what you’re really after by doing this. Since this is your choice, I hope you won’t regret it.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Shirley shot back. “Is Mia in danger?”

“If Jenna sends me a patient who’s still alive, then I can cure her. You’d better pray she still has a bit of humanity

left in her.”

Joseph went to prepare the emergency team. After about 15 minutes, the ambulance from the Traditional Medicine Center arrived with Mia.

She was still alive.

Joseph took over and did a preliminary exam. Then, he had her wheeled straight into the ER for a more thorough workup. While they waited for the test results, he organized another consultation.

He treated Mia himself. By around 10:00 pm, he had successfully pulled her back and even gotten her to wake up.

“She’s out of immediate danger,” he told Shirley. “You can keep her here to recover, or you can take her back to the Traditional Medicine Center. You can even send her to a different rehab facility. It’s your call.”

From start to end, Joseph hadn’t seen any sign of Jonas. He figured the latter would only show up once he himself left. With a guilty conscience like that, there was no way Jonas and Cora hadn’t done something they shouldn’t have.
