Chapter 335
Joseph returned to his scripture reading.
He had switched off his phone, leaving both it and his laptop in the car at the foot of the mountain. With nothing left to weigh him down, he felt truly unburdened.
And just like that, another day passed.
Joseph was having some tea and reading in the rear quarters of the monastery when a knock sounded at the door. It was the woman from the previous day.
Joseph asked, “What are you doing here again?”
She said, “I have a question for you. You never examined me, and I never told you why I was here. How were you so certain I was here to pray for a child?”
She got straight to the point. Earlier that day, she’d been stopped at the monastery entrance. Only after asking around did she learn that Joseph had already guessed her purpose. The abbot, having understood her intentions, refused to let her stay.
“I guessed it.” Just then, Joseph noticed the woman raising her phone to take a picture of him. He instinctively turned his face away, but it was already too late. Within moments of sending the picture out, she received a
response.
“So you’re the famous Dr. Joseph Hart from Jenton University Hospital. You’ve got quite an impressive reputation, ” she remarked.
“My reputation is more infamous than famous.” Joseph was slightly surprised by how efficiently she’d identified him, but that was all.
The woman saw that Joseph remained unusually calm, just continuing to read his book. She was frustrated that she didn’t get the satisfaction she’d expected from exposing his identity.
As for mentioning Joseph’s daughters, she was worried it wouldn’t provoke him and would only make her seem petty.
At the thought of that, she asked, “So, with medical skills as good as yours, why aren’t you working at the hospital? Why are you hiding out here?”
Joseph raised an eyebrow. “Didn’t your research tell you I’d been fired? I don’t have a job anymore, which means I’m free to go wherever I please.”
Joseph hoped she’d take the hint and leave. Instead, she calmly sat down across from him and poured herself a cup of tea.
He simply ignored her and continued reading.
She asked, “I came here to pray for a child. Do you have a solution for me?”
Joseph scoffed. “According to scripture, that’s impossible!”
She shook her head. “I don’t care what the scripture says; I’m asking you. You’re a doctor. You must have a way.”
Joseph asked, “Are you married?”
The woman retorted, “Of course I am!”

He continued, “You seem like a capable woman, which tells me you’ve probably tried every conventional treatment. If you’re healthy, then the problem is almost certainly your husband’s. So, there’s only one solution. Get divorced and marry a normal man.”
Her expression darkened. “So just because your marriage fell apart, you want everyone else’s marriage to end too?
Joseph remained silent.
His wife was beautiful, and his three daughters had been obedient, intelligent children. Their family had enjoyed a comfortable, affluent life. It would be hard to say that his marriage had been an entirely unhappy one.
The only reason it fell apart was that he’d been deceived and had been cheated on for over a decade.
The woman pressed him relentlessly. “Answer me. Why aren’t you saying anything? Don’t avoid the question.”
She was determined to regain some dignity after he’d so effortlessly exposed her intentions the day before.
Joseph lowered his gaze to the scripture and quietly recited, “All forms are false. If one perceives that what one sees is not everything, one will find the truth.”
The woman was annoyed. “Stop quoting things I can’t understand. Just answer my question.”
