A Man with Nerves of Steel (Joseph Hart) novel Chapter 336

Chapter 336

Two days later, the woman returned once more. The moment she saw Joseph, she froze. He had shaved his head completely bald. “Did you actually join the monastery?”

“I just shaved my head. It doesn’t mean I joined the monastery.” Joseph had simply grown tired of washing and maintaining his hair, so he had someone shave it off.

Then, he looked at her. “What are you doing here again?”

The woman said, “I spent the last couple of days in Jenton. I tried to get a good idea of your situation, and I can more or less tell that someone’s going to kill you if you go back. I don’t understand it. You’re just an ordinary doctor. How did you end up making so many enemies?”

As she spoke, she poured herself some tea.

Joseph said calmly, “In that case, I just won’t go back. I’ll stay here on the mountain.”

In truth, Joseph wasn’t afraid of dying.

But he found himself reassessing the woman before him. She had traveled all the way to Jenton to investigate him. The fact that she knew people wanted him dead meant she’d uncovered more than most outsiders ever could.

She clearly came from an influential family.

The woman said, “What a shame. You won’t be able to stay here much longer, because your wife and her people have already started looking for you. Cora really is breathtakingly beautiful. I honestly can’t understand how you can walk away from a woman like her.”

Joseph scoffed. “Mind your own business. If you’ve got so much free time, maybe you should focus on solving your own problems.”

The mere mention of Cora still stirred resentment inside him. Until the divorce was finalized, hearing her name would always leave a bitter taste in his mouth.

“You’ve got such a terrible personality. No wonder people don’t like you.” The woman had expected Joseph to ask for her help or to ask her to protect him, but he merely told her to mind her own business.

She didn’t like men who refused to lower their pride.

Yet, that very attitude only made Joseph more interesting to her.

After finishing her tea, she stood up to leave. Just then, her phone rang.

After answering the call, she walked straight back and grabbed Joseph’s wrist. “Come with me.”

Joseph immediately pulled her hand free. “Have some self-respect.’

The woman rolled her eyes. “What do you think I’m trying to do? You think I’ve fallen for you and want to sleep with you? Keep dreaming. Someone in my family is seriously ill. You’re a doctor. I just need you to examine them.”

Joseph replied, “With your family’s influence, surely you have no shortage of doctors. Right now, I just want to stay here and practice my faith. I have no interest in treating patients.”

The woman said, “But you’re a doctor…”

Joseph scoffed. “So you’re just going to try to use morality to pressure me into doing what you want.”

Joseph refused to budge. If he treated everyone who was ill, he’d probably die from exhaustion.

The woman snorted and left.

The mountain returned to its peaceful silence. Later that evening, however, the abbot came looking for him.

The abbot sighed. “Joseph, you tried to step away from one burden, only to find another waiting for you. That young woman who came here praying for a child is not asking you to save a member of her family. She’s applying a lot of pressure this time.”

Joseph was bewildered. “So even this place can’t shelter me from it?”

He could already guess what had happened. The woman had almost certainly leaned on the monastery. If he refused to save the patient, he would no longer be welcome here.

And this place was the only place where he’d truly found peace.

The abbot nodded gently. “Saving a life is also a merit. And perhaps this was something you were meant to do.”

Joseph smiled bitterly. “Something I’m meant to do? Whatever. Life is rarely perfect, after all. If only things went the way I want.”

Joseph closed his book, tidied himself up, and headed down the mountain. A driver was already waiting to take him to the city, where they entered a private hospital.

The hospital belonged to the woman’s family.

The hospital wasn’t particularly large, but its equipment was state-of-the-art, and the patient rooms resembled luxury hotel suites.
