Joseph returned, but continued avoiding Cora. It was because he knew some part of him still loved her.
He wasn’t a man made of stone. After nearly 20 years together, he couldn’t simply erase those feelings overnight.
Of course, he also hated Cora for betraying him and defiling the love he had devoted to their marriage/
And even now, Cora still showed no remorse. She continued piling lie upon lie, treating him as though he were a. fool.
After resting for the night, Joseph drove to the Snow family’s estate on the outskirts to examine Cindy again. Her complexion had improved dramatically; she was already out of bed and walking. Although she couldn’t stay on her feet for long, the improvement was nothing short of miraculous.
Cindy sincerely apologized to Joseph. “Dr. Hart, I owe you an apology. I doubted you before and even spoke / disrespectfully to you. I hope you’ll forgive my ignorance.”
Joseph didn’t mind a few harsh words at all. After all, it wasn’t his first time facing issues of trust between doctor and patient.
He shook his head. “There’s no need for that. Just treat me as your doctor, and I’ll treat you like every other patient who’s come under my care.”
When Cindy hesitated, Joseph added, “Do you have any questions about your illness? Ask me whatever you’d like.”
Cindy asked, “I just want to know how I was poisoned.”
Joseph said, “Strictly speaking, it was a parasitic sort of poison. As for what kind of parasite it was, I still haven’t identified it. All I did was treat it. Of course, based on the damage it caused your body, I can estimate when you were infected.
“If you think back to everything that happened during that period, you’ll probably be able to figure out how it happened.”
Joseph took out an old calendar and circled a 15-day window.
During a break from Cindy’s acupuncture treatment, Joseph sat outside drinking some coffee with Richard.
Richard said, “I’ve made some inquiries and discovered that it was Jonas who contacted the health authorities. He was the one who got you stripped of your position at the hospital. This is his itinerary for the next three days. If you want, I could…”
He drew a finger across his throat, implying he could eliminate Jonas if Joseph wanted.
Joseph glanced over the schedule and saw that most of Jonas’ time would be spent at their company. There was also a trip to Celestial Farm planned. Richard was probably intending to kill Jonas there.
The name immediately reminded Joseph that Cora had visited Celestial Farm numerous times herself. It seemed like she was closer to Jonas than he’d expected.
“I don’t want bloodshed unless there’s absolutely no other choice. We’re nowhere near that point yet,” Joseph said calmly. Even if Cora truly had an affair with Jonas, it remained just a matter of betrayal between husband and
wife.
If the love was gone, they could simply part ways. There was no need to kill anyone. Doing so might end up dragging him into it as well.

“I’m not afraid of dying,” Richard said.
Joseph chuckled. “I know you’re not afraid of dying. After all, according to your family history, you people can only live to 40. If you killed someone today, even a 20-year sentence would feel like a bargain.”
After all, Joseph was already 25.
According to the hereditary illness that plagued the Snow family, he would certainly die before reaching 40. Worst still was the fact that he would spend the final ten years of his life suffering.
Richard grinned in response.
