Cora insisted, “I didn’t lie to you. I’ve loved you wholeheartedly all these years. I’ve never done anything to betray you!”
Joseph asked bluntly, “What about the time you went to the hot springs with Warren?”
Cora shook her head. “I never did that! Stop making things up!”
Joseph let out a snide laugh. “I knew you’d deny it. Warren is dead now, so there’s no one left to contradict you But you did it, and we both know that’s the truth. Just leave. We have nothing left to talk about.”
Cora knew that staying would only make the argument worse. Reluctantly, she turned and left.
Shortly after Joseph finished the takeout meal he had ordered, Yelena arrived. “Joseph, I need to tell you something. Peyton and I went to see Cora today. I know what we did was wrong, but I honestly had no idea Peyton was going to provoke Cora like that. I felt like I owed you an explanation.”
The moment she walked in, Yelena confessed everything and offered a sincere apology. She knew she shouldn’t have approached Cora in the first place-after all, it was a private marital matter.
Joseph said, “Cora isn’t stupid. You might have shaken her for a moment, but she’ll quickly see through Peyton’s act. Cora is a highly rational person. She’d never blindly believe something that outrageous. Besides, she’ll look into Peyton’s background.”
He took a slow sip of his tea before continuing. “By now, anyone with halfway decent sources knows that the children I raised aren’t mine. I’m a pathetic, useless man. I’ve become the local laughingstock, so you can probably understand why I want to join the monastery.”
Yelena looked at him earnestly. “That’s not your fault. There’s no need to beat yourself up like that. Your medical skills are unparalleled, and you’re a genuinely kind person.”
Joseph smiled faintly. “So what you’re saying is, I’m just a ‘nice guy.’ Thanks for the label.”
“That’s not what I meant…” Yelena sighed.
She continued, “But since you’re in the mood to joke about it, you’ve clearly made peace with reality. I won’t try to comfort you anymore.”
She reached into her bag, pulled out an ATM card, and handed it to Joseph. “Peyton knows she crossed the line. She was too embarrassed to face you herself, so she asked me to apologize on her behalf. There’s five million dollars on this card. Please accept it.”
Joseph took it without a second thought. “Fine. Tell her this for me. If she wants to turn her little lie into reality, I’m more than happy to cooperate.”
Yelena laughed. “Alright, I’ll pass the message along.”
Seeing that Joseph’s expression hadn’t changed in the slightest, she knew perfectly well he was just playing along. It seemed the man could be quite the smooth-talker when he wanted to be.
Neither Joseph nor Yelena realized that Peyton’s visit to Cora had only been the first half of her plan. She had also gone after Jonas.
Right after Jonas left Celestial Farm, his convoy was rear-ended by vehicles belonging to the Roth family.
The Roth family’s men dragged Jonas’ bodyguards out of their cars and beat them mercilessly. Jonas himself

wasn’t spared, either. Several vicious kicks landed squarely between his legs, leaving him with severe injuries.
Joseph only learned about it the following day from Belinda, right after he finished with Marie’s treatment.
Joseph realized with sharp clarity that this was the perfect catalyst for Belinda. “If his injuries are serious enough to require surgery and a long hospital stay, then the Towne family is about to hit a massive power vacuum. This is your chance to step up.”
