A Man with Nerves of Steel (Joseph Hart) novel Chapter 398

Chapter 398

Cora hurriedly tried to explain herself to Joseph, “Honey, don’t believe Yara’s lies. None of that is true. She was only saying what you wanted to hear to drive a wedge between us.”

“Of course I don’t believe her. I know you’re as virtuous and faithful as they come.”

Joseph shot Cora with a look of contempt. He wanted nothing more than to slap her, but in the end, he swallowed his anger.

Cora knew he was being sarcastic, but she had to play along. She couldn’t very well say he was wrong.

She wondered what it would take to resolve the misunderstanding between them. There were things she couldn’t tell him. If he learned them, the consequences would be unimaginable. Maybe, with time, he’d just come around.

She turned her attention to Yara. “Did she ever say why she drew blood from the kids?”

“She didn’t. You should take her with you and get her to talk.”

Seeing that the blood bag was full, Joseph detached the tubing and gathered up the other disposable equipment. “D-Did you slip her some kind of slow-acting poison? Like the kind that would keep her sick for a month or two and make sure she couldn’t survive for long even if she escaped?”

“No. I just wanted her to experience what it felt like to be bled dry.”

That was all Joseph said before telling Cora to get her people to take Yara away. When Cora invited him to her place, he refused.

Once Cora was gone, Peyton came back in. “Joseph, why’d you let Yara go? Aren’t you afraid she’ll be back for revenge? If you don’t want the hassle, we’ll deal with her.”

“She still hasn’t told me who my daughters’ biological fathers are. She’s still useful to me. Besides, Cora’s a woman. She probably knows how to break another woman better than I do.”

Joseph waved his hand, signaling for Peyton to leave as well.

“Joseph, you’re a good man. But this damn world keeps forcing you to do things you never wanted to do. It’s really messed up.”

Peyton grumbled that last part before leaving.

Joseph no longer blamed the world. This was the life he had chosen, and these were the consequences of his own actions. All he could do now was accept them and face them.

After cleaning up his office, he called Yasmin.

Ever since Grace’died, Mavis had made Yasmin the point of contact for Joseph regarding the treatments and

whatnot.

Neither Yasmin nor Joseph wanted anything to do with the other, but both kept up a polite facade.

Joseph wanted Yasmin to look into the three men Yara had mentioned. He didn’t have the resources to dig into them himself.

That said, certain intelligence was shared within the Croma faction, including Jenton’s corresponding databases. All Yasmin had to do was make a call, and she could pull up the information.

Yasmin replied arrogantly, “That’s outside the scope of our agreement. Why should I help you?”

“If you won’t do it, I’ll just ask Mavis to do it. It’s not like I actually want to talk to you. And while I’m at it, I’m going to make you look bad in front of her too.”

“You’re such a bastard, Joseph Hart!”

“Compared to you? I’m nowhere close.”
