Chapter 399
That was what Joseph figured. Since he had put pressure on Yara, her backers surely knew about it by now and would soon show themselves to rescue her. It was also possible that Cora would send Yara back to the Zahn family.
Joseph fell into deep thought. “This is where we find out whether you still have a heart or you’re just a monster. After everything that’s happened, can you really just sit there and do nothing?”
Later, he got an update. Yara had been taken to Jenton University Hospital, then transferred to the Traditional Medicine Center, where she was placed in a VIP intensive care ward for treatment.
He immediately called Cora. “What the hell did you do? You had her, and then you just sent her straight back to the Zahn family. Unbelievable. You really are one of them, aren’t you?”
“It’s not like that. Her family came and arranged the transfer. What could I, an outsider, possibly do?” Cora said, unable to do anything about the misunderstanding between them.
“Funny how you could do anything and everything when it came to ruining my work and my life. Why don’t you put that same energy into dealing with her?
“The conflict between you and her is on a completely different scale than ours. I only want a peaceful divorce, whereas she has put your daughters’ lives at risk and wants to ruin their lives.”
“We are not getting a divorce. I know exactly who’s on my side and who isn’t. And I will never forgive the people who harmed the children. Besides, I’ve already got people keeping close tabs on Yara-”
“If you refuse to divorce, then you’re on your own!”
Joseph hung up on her. He had expected Cora to be unable to keep Yara under her control. But he didn’t expect her to fold in less than a day and let Yara slip right back into the Zahn family’s hands just like that.
“You sent Yara back because you didn’t want to offend the Zahn family, didn’t you? After all, I was the one who abducted Yara. That way, you get to wash your hands of it! You are truly untrustworthy, Cora!
“Has the Lowell family really run out of people and resources? If so, can you even hold on to your wealth?” Joseph
wondered.
He had a feeling that the Lowell family’s business was about to run into serious trouble. If the Zahn family couldn’t squeeze cash out of the Lowell family, they would undoubtedly move in and seize their assets.
Cora was the wealthiest of them all, and there was a very high chance that one of her children was also a member of the Zahn family by blood. Hence, the Zahn family would definitely try to take back that fortune.
“It’s a shame that I don’t know the Lowell family’s most closely guarded secrets. If I did, I might be able to use them to my advantage and push things along.”
Deep in thought, Joseph took a drag of his cigarette.
Yasmin actually came through and sent over the files on Bruce and the others. Joseph read through them twice, committed the details to memory, and then permanently deleted them.
“Since Cora is aware that Yara ratted out those three, she’s probably already warned them by now. Then again, Yara was just running her mouth without hard proof. There’s still the possibility that she’s just trying to use me to get rid of those three.
“At the moment, the Zahn family is surrounded. They have outsiders coming after them, and even the local families in Jenton are unhappy with them.

“As for Bruce Byers and Charlie Banks, they are the pillars of their respective families. Cora definitely formed some kind of pact or alliance with the local families to fight back against the Zahn family’s unreasonable demands.
“Jenna could use me as a pawn to break apart that alliance. But for now, my top priority should still be finding out who the children’s biological fathers are…”
After reaching this conclusion, he sent his people to collect DNA samples from Bruce, Charlie, and Edmund. He intended to use them to determine whether they were related to Natalie and the others.
