A Man with Nerves of Steel (Joseph Hart) novel Chapter 400

Chapter 400

The next morning, Joseph received a call from Lexi. She’d been to several top-tier hospitals in other cities, but none of them had come up with a better treatment plan for Jonathan.

Now she wanted to transfer him back to a healthcare facility in Jenton. Since Joseph didn’t have a better treatment plan either, he had no choice but to politely decline the request.

His clinic was poorly equipped and wasn’t suitable for long-term hospitalization or treatment anyway.

At the same time, he egged Lexi on to take revenge against the Zahn family. Lexi, easily swayed, declared over the phone that the Zahn family would pay. Joseph then ended the call.

Around 10:00 am, Shirley showed up at the clinic for a follow-up. She had become extremely sensitive and felt as if there were a volcano of desire inside her, ready to erupt at any moment.

These were the side effects of that drug. Grace had been affected by the same drug back then. But because Joseph had personally detoxified her and relieved the effects, her lingering side effects were nowhere near as severe as Shirley’s.

Joseph said, “I can write you a prescription. You can get the medicine from a hospital. It’ll suppress your hormones, but it’s just a band-aid solution. You’re young, so you should just find another man and have a normal sex life. Then your body will sort itself out.”

“I chose to come to you because we’re already acquainted. And as a doctor, you understand my situation and won’t judge me the way others might,” Shirley said bluntly.

“Would Jonas be okay with that?”

Joseph narrowed his eyes. He had zero interest in Shirley, but if he could use her to provoke and punish Jonas, he was willing to play along.

“He will. His situation leaves him with no choice anyway. Joseph, you know exactly what I’m dealing with. So if you’re down, we can start right now.

“After we’re done, I won’t breathe a word to Cora or Jonas about it. It’ll stay between us.”

Shirley’s cheeks immediately flushed. She had seen the videos of Joseph from when he was back in the hospital. Everything about him appealed to her. She was itching to get started.

Joseph cleared his throat. “The way you’re rushing this makes me feel like you’re trying to lure me into a trap. You know my situation as well. I want to divorce Cora, but she refuses. You’re in the same boat. If something happens between us now, both of us will end up in a very vulnerable position.”

Obviously, Joseph had no intention of sleeping with her. She just didn’t have that kind of pull over him.

“So you’re saying I should get a divorce, too? Jonas would probably agree to it. I mean, with him being the way he is now, he can’t expect me to stay tied down. I’m only in my early 30s. He has no right to make me live like a widow.”

“Sure, but what if he agrees to the divorce and cuts you off completely? Without money, how long do you think you’ll be living the high life?

“Considering your looks and your current condition, once you run out of money, you’ll have no choice but to make a living in the nightlife scene.”

Hearing that, Shirley shuddered. She was still considered beautiful, just not on Cora’s level. If she had no money

but still had those desires, she might end up selling herself just to survive.

Shirley went quiet. Her fear of poverty was enough to overpower her physical urges.

Joseph said, “That’s why you still need financial security even if you divorce. Otherwise, you’ll have nothing. And even if we did get together, it couldn’t just be for a moment of pleasure, could it?”

That reality check snapped Shirley out of her daze. “Then what should I do?”

“I don’t know enough about your personal life to give you advice. Just go home and think it over. At the end of the day, if you don’t look out for number one, nobody will.”
