Arthur consulted Jenna once more. After getting her approval, Arthur allowed Shirley to make arrangements for Jonas’ treatment outside the hospital.

Once Shirley left, Arthur turned to Joseph, who had remained silent throughout. “Back then, we should’ve let you treat Jonas. Even Maurice’s outcome might have been different.”

Joseph shook his head. “Don’t say that. I’m still lacking in clinical experience compared to all of you.”

Arthur scoffed. “Don’t pretend to be modest. Since you’re already here, why don’t you take a look at Wallace? Jenna isn’t around today.”

Joseph immediately replied, “Wallace? He’s one of Jenna’s patients. I wouldn’t dare touch that case.”

With that, Joseph took his leave.

As he rounded a deserted corner, Shirley suddenly stepped out, startling him. She deliberately leaned against him, pressing herself close.

Joseph said, “Who told you to do what you just did in Arthur’s office?”

“How did you know someone put me up to it?” Shirley asked.

She’d barely managed to get a little closer before Joseph stopped her. He swatted her on the backside, making her yelp in surprise.

This man was rough. And so very manly.

Worse, it felt as though he could see straight through her. She adjusted her hair, avoiding his sharp gaze.

When she realized he wasn’t letting the matter go, she finally admitted, “I went to see Belinda last night. We made peace and reached an agreement. If I get Jonas discharged from the hospital, she’ll secure my position within the Towne family.”

So Belinda listened to his advice and had started eyeing Jonas’ money. But what was Belinda playing at? That woman was impossible to read.

Then, he said, “I wish you success.”

Shirley looked at him. “Where are you staying tonight? Give me an address, and I’ll go find you.”

Joseph pretended not to hear her, waving goodbye as he walked away.

On his way out of the hospital, he got a call from Katie. She wanted to accompany him on his next house call. She said she wanted to learn from him, and Joseph happened to have a few questions for her, so he agreed.

When Katie got into the car, he noticed she’d carefully done her makeup. Compared to before, she looked a lot prettier. He let her into the car, but soon pulled over onto a side road. “I can’t take you with me if you look like

“If the patient’s family sees you dressed up like this, no one would believe you know medicine.”

Katie hurriedly said, “No, I’ll take my makeup off right now!”

Katie dug through her purse, pulling out makeup remover and wet wipes. A few minutes later, she’d wiped herself clean and was back to her natural appearance.

Katie giggled. “No, I did this for you, Joseph. I just want you to have something nice to look at. If you’re in a good mood, maybe you’ll teach me more medicine.”

Joseph frowned slightly. “If you want to study medicine, I can teach you. But when it comes to life, I’m a complete failure. I hope you don’t learn that from me.”

Then, Joseph changed the subject, asking Katie to tell him about the night before.

Katie didn’t hide anything. She recounted everything she knew. But there was one detail she’d overlooked that Joseph immediately picked up on. It seemed that Lexi’s family had made their move.
