Chapter 413
Joseph was annoyed. Since there was nothing he could do, he decided the best option was to step outside for a smoke.
Even from a distance, he could hear her crying. Fortunately, he was the only person in the office. Otherwise, people would have thought something terrible had happened and that he had done something to Jenna.
After finishing two cigarettes, he realized the crying had stopped. When he saw that Jenna was not coming out he was worried that something might have happened to her, so he headed back inside. There, he found her curled up on the couch, fast asleep.
He called out her name softly, but she didn’t respond. Even giving her shoulder a gentle shake didn’t wake her up. He checked her pulse and confirmed she was simply sleeping. In the end, she was forced to leave her alone.
He sat nearby and went back to reading his books and documents.
Time passed quickly, and before he knew it, it was already one in the morning.
Jenna woke up with a start, noticing that she was still in Joseph’s office. She immediately felt the throbbing headache of a hangover. More urgently, however, her bladder felt like it was about to burst.
After asking where the restroom was, she bolted out of the office.
Once she’d finished, she lingered at the sink, splashing cold water onto her face again and again until her thoughts cleared.
The realization that Joseph hadn’t taken advantage of her made her trust him even more.
When she returned, she poured herself a glass of water. Then, she slowly sobered up.
She said, “Joseph, I wasn’t the woman Victor slept with. She’s had plastic surgery and just happens to look like me. She’s taller, and her chest is bigger than mine. You’re a smart man. There’s no way you couldn’t tell us apart.”
Joseph replied calmly, “Just because you’re not her doesn’t mean there wasn’t anything between you and Victor. Those are two entirely different issues.”
Jenna put her hand to her chest. “I swear I didn’t do anything of the sort. If I’m lying, may I get hit by a car the moment I step outside!”
Joseph raised an eyebrow. “That’s a pretty vicious oath. Aren’t you afraid you’ll jinx yourself? I have to admit that you’re pretty fearless.”
Joseph gave her a thumbs-up. “You’re just fooling yourself, Jenna. If you’re really this principled, then why do you keep defending the Zahn family’s actions? Why help them commit their crimes? In my eyes, you’re just another hypocrite. You want your noble reputation, but the benefits of these acts.”
Jenna shot back. “And what about you? Your reputation is already in the gutter. What gives you the right to criticize me?”
Joseph didn’t deny it. “You’re right. I had a scandal in the dormitories, and I got fired from the hospital. My reputation is already in the drain. And there are three children in my house that aren’t even mine. That’s become a joke everyone laughs about.
“But I don’t have an image to protect. If people want to call me filthy, let them. I accept it. What about you? Can you accept who you really are?”

Jenna snorted. “I’ll only say this once. It wasn’t me. It’s up to you if you believe it or not.”
Joseph laughed sarcastically. “I believe you.”
“How dumb,” Jenna muttered.
After finishing the water, she sat down on the couch and looked at him. “I’m done competing with you. I admit defeat. Starting tomorrow, I won’t be going back to the Traditional Medicine Center. I’ll come work at your clinic.”
Joseph shook his head. “No.”
Jenna continued, “I don’t need a salary. I’ll work for free.”
Joseph scoffed. “That makes it even worse. You’re acting way too suspiciously. I definitely can’t accept you.”
“You….” Jenna was speechless.
