Chapter 414
Joseph mumbled to himself, “That little witch. What was she trying to pull? That old pervert, Victor, either found a woman with Jenna’s face or had one made to look like her. Doesn’t that mean he’d been entertaining those thoughts all along?
“So she must have felt disgusted and betrayed. She can’t trust the Zahn family anymore, so now she thinks I’m reliable and comes running to me to verit?”
He let out a self-deprecating chuckle. “What does she take me for?”
With that, Joseph decided to get some rest.
While the outside world was a storm of schemes and shifting alliances, things around Joseph remained relatively quiet. Unfortunately, he started to have nightmares again.
Grace stood in the middle of an empty road, covered in blood, beckoning him toward her. Her lips moved as though she wanted to speak, but what spilled from her mouth was thick, dark blood.
Joseph jolted awake, drenched in cold sweat.
He wasn’t a timid man, nor did he believe in ghosts or spirits. It made these nightmares all the stranger.
Did Grace die with unfinished business?
The thought left him unsettled, and he could no longer fall back asleep. So, he took a shower and immersed himself in his medical texts.
At dawn, he called Yasmin. Her irritation was evident. “It’s so early. Do you ever let people sleep?”
Joseph snorted. “Shouldn’t you be attending to Mavis instead of sleeping in? Aren’t you worried I’ll report you? If you want an easy life, you should earn it first.”
The great families cared deeply about hierarchy and rules. If Yasmin gave him attitude, he’d return the favor.
Yasmin snorted. “What do you want from me this time?”
Joseph said, “I’ve been thinking about how suspicious Grace’s death was. I think there’s more to it, and I want you to look into it. I won’t ask you to do it for free. Consider it a favor. I’ll owe you one.”
Yasmin laughed. “Is your favor really worth that much? Don’t think so highly of yourself.”
Joseph replied, “I don’t have power or influence, so I can’t promise you mountains of gold, but I do have my medical skills. One day, either you or someone you care about will get sick. When that day comes, you’ll come asking me to repay this favor. I might just save a life.
“You haven’t found the person who poisoned Mavis with cholera, right? You spend so much time around her. Aren’t you worried someone might poison you next? If Grace’s death wasn’t an accident, then someone is targeting Mavis, or the people around her.”
Yasmin raised an eyebrow. “Are you trying to scare me?”
Joseph shrugged. “Think whatever you want. I’m only asking you to keep an eye out. All you need to do is find evidence that Grace’s death was suspicious. Once I’ve dealt with everything in Jenton, I’ll go to Croma myself to investigate. You won’t have to stick your neck out.”
Yasmin replied immediately, “Deal. Just don’t die in Jenton before you can repay that favor.”

Joseph hung up after that. He’d already sent one of Grace’s former subordinates to Croma to investigate her death. But investigating a family as influential as the Yeagers couldn’t be done openly. There was no room for mistakes, and there might not even be anything to uncover.
So, they’d found nothing useful so far.
However, Yasmin was different. As Zachary’s wife, she had access to Mavis. It gave her a natural advantage in uncovering the truth.
The question was whether she would actually help.
