Joseph, of course, had no idea Lexi was entertaining such thoughts. If he did, he would make sure she regretted ever having them.

Around noon, the head of the task force investigating the blood transfusions invited Joseph to lunch at a local restaurant. Officially, it was to discuss some questions regarding the blood transfusions.

Neither Joseph nor Cora had allowed Natalie, Selena, and Kimberly to be connected to the case. They tried to keep the girls out of the investigation to protect them.

The discovery of the blood collection vehicle had already given the task force a major breakthrough, leading them to several biotechnology projects owned by the Zahn family’s conglomerates.

This time, Joseph was given access to some of the project files. As he flipped through the documents, he was struck by the advanced nature of the research. Of course, it was also horrifying from an ethical standpoint.

He didn’t hold back as he pointed out the countless ethical violations and medical risks involved in the projects.

Then, in the middle of organizing his thoughts, inspiration struck. He recalled seeing a congratulatory post on the Lowell Group’s internal forum celebrating the establishment of one of their life sciences subsidiaries. Joseph suddenly wondered if Cora might have been involved in these projects, too.

Of course, he kept that speculation to himself.

Cora really was everywhere. Her reach was quite frightening.

Joseph’s expression darkened.

Cora and the Zahn family had clearly been cooperating for years, yet Cora had repeatedly claimed he knew nothing about them. Either her acting was flawless, or she truly didn’t know.

But nothing came free in this world.

Why had the Zahn family given Cora so many lucrative projects? It was either because of her beauty or because the children belonged to the Zahn family. If the girls truly were from the Zahn family, then every project and every dollar Cora earned had ultimately been for the Zahn family’s descendants.

When the girls came of age, the Zahn family could simply reclaim them and welcome them back into the fold. Then, all the benefits they’d given Cora would eventually return to them. In the meantime, they used Cora to make even more money for themselves.

The rest of the afternoon was spent explaining the Zahn family’s blood transfusion projects to the task force. He broke down the medical theories, the methodology, and the underlying science. It was more of a training session than an investigation.

Even so, Joseph never mentioned the Lowell Group. He might resent Cora, but all he wanted was to divorce her and have her lover step forward to take responsibility for her. If Joseph were able, he’d deal with the man himself, If he weren’t, then he’d just join the monastery.

The fire at the Lowell Group, thanks to Belinda, had already vented half of his anger. The other half could be saved for the adulterer.

Cora, meanwhile, had troubles of her own. She only learned of Jonas’ discharge and transfer out of the hospital after the fact. Over the phone, she’d scolded Jonas for acting on his own. She berated him, telling him that he would die, and when he did, Shirley would be free to take off with his money.

However, Cora arrived with a lawyer that afternoon. Jonas intended to finalize his will and divide his assets. Cora was surprised to see that he left Shirley nothing, leaving everything to his children. She felt that it was quite a cold -hearted move by Jonas.
