Joseph cut her off. “Cora, you won’t let me interfere in your company. You won’t even let me set foot inside your headquarters. So, you don’t get to interfere in mine, either. I have work to do, so leave.”

Joseph had long since grown accustomed to Cora’s effortless lies, so much so that he was numb to them now. He had no desire to continue the conversation and simply wanted her out of his sight.

When she asked him to go back home, Joseph refused without hesitation. What was there to go back to? To look at the children he had poured his heart into raising, only to learn they belonged to someone else? It would only bring more pain, humiliation, and resentment.

Cora returned home in disappointment. Faced with the hopeful looks in her children’s eyes, neither her words nor the things she had brought carried any weight. Selena lost her temper on the spot and threw everything Cora had brought onto the floor.

Cora was about to scold her when the girl complained of a headache and feeling unwell. When Selena went back to her room, she even threw away her medicine and declared that she would rather die.

Seeing this, Helen hurried to comfort her granddaughter. But all the girl wanted was for Joseph to come home, which was a wish Helen could not grant.

The entire household was in shambles.

Returning to the study, Helen said to Cora, “Why don’t we send her to Joseph? Let her stay with him for a while. He will make her better.”

Córa shook her head. “No. Joseph is extremely unstable right now. He’s completely lost himself. If the girls go to him, he’ll end up hurting them.”

The girls’ current condition was entirely under Joseph’s influence. If not for the uncertainty about who was backing Yara, she would have already used that antidote to restore her daughters to normal and free them from Joseph’s hold.

Helen said, “But this situation isn’t any better.”

Cora sighed. “Let’s leave things as they are for now.”

Helen frowned. “Then why won’t he come home? He seemed fine when I saw him at the hospital. Why did he change his mind the moment he left?”

Cora’s expression darkened. “Jonas. He has a misunderstanding about what happened between Jonas and me. He refuses to believe anything I say. He’s stubborn to the core, and now Shirley’s trying to seduce him. She’s just adding oil to the fire.”

Helen studied Cora. “Is there really nothing going on between you and Jonas?”

Cora frowned. “Of course not.”

Helen asked, “Did you go to the hot springs with Jonas as you did with Warren?”

Cora immediately answered, “I did not.”

Helen pressed on. “Then did you do everything with him other than sleeping with him?”

Cora looked at Helen unhappily. “Mom, what are you trying to say? Do you doubt me, too?”
