“Joseph, you’d better let me go, or I’ll call the police and report you for unlawful detention.” Marla took a deep breath. She couldn’t tell Joseph the truth, or her life would become a living hell.

“The police? Marla, I saved your family before. Is this how you repay me?” Joseph’s expression turned cold.

“You’re a doctor. Saving lives is your responsibility. How could you use that to bargain with me? Where are your ethics?” Marla was being openly hostile.

Joseph chuckled mirthlessly. “So morality really is the best weapon, isn’t it? Fine, I won’t make things difficult for you.”

Joseph dragged Marla into a car and drove straight to Skyhaven Central. Then, he called Yara and told her to come get Marla.

“Yara, keep your dog on a leash. Don’t let her wander into my clinic again. I don’t treat animals!” Joseph shoved Marla toward Yara. Seeing the cold, guarded look on Yara’s face and her obvious lack of interest in speaking to him, Joseph simply turned around and left.

Yara brought Marla inside and had her subordinates conduct a thorough examination. Only after confirming that Marla wasn’t bugged did she relax slightly. “Weren’t you in Horba? How did you end up back in Jenton?”

Marla said, “I have no idea. I got sleepy in Horba and took a nap in the car. When I woke up, I was already in Joseph’s clinic. I think he kidnapped me. Should I report him to the police?”

Yara shook her head. “Joseph has been in Jenton the entire time. He couldn’t have done it himself. Even if someone else did it on his behalf, reporting it won’t help. Right, did he do anything to you at the clinic? Did he assault you?”

Marla hadn’t noticed any signs that she had been violated. “No. I told him I was going to call the police, and he brought me here. He just kept asking me who Cora’s children belonged to. Other than that, he didn’t ask much.”

“Joseph really doesn’t know when to give up,” Yara said in exasperation.

After pressing Marla for details and concluding there wasn’t enough to implicate Joseph directly, Yara was about to arrange somewhere safe for Marla to stay when there was suddenly frantic knocking at the door.

One of her people opened it, and Cora pushed her way inside with several others.

“What are you doing here?” Yara stepped forward to stop them, only for Cora to slap her across the face without warning.

For a moment, Yara was completely stunned.

“Take her!” Cora ignored Yara and instructed her men to seize Marla.

“Ms. Zahn, save me!” Marla cried desperately.

Yara tried to stop Cora. “Cora, I will sue you for trespassing.”

Cora sneered. “Is this your house? Go ahead, call the police. You can sue me if you want.”

She glared at Yara. “If I find out my daughters’ situation has anything to do with you, I won’t let you off. My husband is kind and doesn’t have the heart to hurt people, but I do. I know ways to make you wish you were dead. I can also kill you without anyone ever noticing.”

Yara was furious at the warning, but she was outnumbered at the moment and couldn’t do anything. The only

Cora dragged Marla into the car and handed Marla a cellphone. She said, “You can make one phone call. If the person you call can’t save you, then don’t blame me for whatever happens next.”
