Cora shot back, “It was you. What is there to find out? Answer me, did Jonas’ death have anything to do with you?”

“You tell me.” Joseph met her gaze calmly, as though she were beneath his notice.

If Cora wanted to turn this into a fight, he would oblige. He might not be able to handle all her bodyguards by himself, but his allies wouldn’t stand by and watch. They would come for him, and they would retaliate against the Lowells.

He was no longer the man he had once been.

“You’re nothing but a thug!” Cora was convinced that Joseph was involved. He had every reason to hate Jonas. He believed she had been involved with Jonas, and Jonas had played a part in costing Joseph his position at the hospital. So, Joseph had a motive.

Yet his composure only made her more uneasy. It suggested that even if she investigated, she would never uncover how he had done it. And even if she somehow did, Joseph likely already had a way to clear his name.

Also, Cora still didn’t know who was helping him behind the scenes. It wasn’t easy for her to find out, either.

All she could do was call him a thug who spread fear wherever he went.

The anger in her eyes ignited something inside Joseph. He stood up abruptly and seized her by the throat, tightening his fingers. “Your lover is dead. Does that make you sad? If you cared about him that much, then join him. Just die with him.”

“Let go!” Cora could feel that the strength in his hands was strong enough to choke her, and she panicked.

Joseph snarled. “Cora, keep betraying me, lying to me, and treating me like a fool. But when retribution finally comes, you won’t get off easily. Neither will the men you’ve been cheating on me with.”

Joseph stared into her pained expression, but he felt no sense of revenge from it. All he felt was painful, unbearable heartache.

The woman standing before him was someone he had loved with all his heart for nearly 20 years. And in the end, she had turned out to be a liar. She had betrayed all the love he felt for her.

He wanted nothing more than to kill her, but that would be letting her off too easily.

What he truly wanted was to destroy the men she loved and watch her suffer the helpless agony of being unable to avenge them. He wanted to see the pain in her expression.

Then, Joseph asked, “Cora, do you regret betraying me?”

Cora stammered out, “I’ve never betrayed you!”

Even now, she refused to admit it. Joseph let out a cold laugh and released her.
