Yara refused to return to the hospital until everything for the funeral had been taken care of.

Joseph knew Yara was only putting on a show. To him, she was a complete hypocrite. She loathed Edmund to the core, yet she had no choice but to shed tears for him.

Perhaps Yara knew there was no cure for her illness and that she would soon die as well. By then, she wouldn’t even have a funeral like this. Her remains would simply be placed in a box and buried in a 21-square-foot plot in a

cemetery.

Edmund had failed as a father, yet he was allowed to be buried in the Zahn family’s ancestral grounds.

Even though Yara resented that, she had no choice but to accept it.

And now Joseph was only making things worse for her-speeding up her demise.

Once they were in the hospital room, Joseph noticed that Yara was in a bad mood. He said, “Ms. Zahn, this may not be the right time to say this, but you have to find Joseph as soon as possible and have him treat you.”

“And where am I going to find him?” Yara didn’t want to listen to Joseph, but he was right. If she didn’t get treatment soon, she would be done for.

“I don’t know either. Usually, the one who knows Joseph best would be able to find him. And do you know who knows him best? His wife.”

“Cora?”

“That’s right. I happened to overhear you two talking last time. I heard she’s had quite a few affairs.

“Since you clearly have her under your thumb, why don’t you push her a little more? She’ll probably go all out to look for him,” Joseph said.

He didn’t want Yara to settle down. He needed her to pressure Cora and drive a wedge between them. That way, Cora would be more likely to reveal something.

As Joseph walked down the corridor, he realized something was wrong. The place was dead silent.

He looked toward Skylar’s hospital room and realized the bodyguards were all gone. Of course, there were no bodyguards outside Yara and Luke’s rooms, either.

Joseph wondered if the Zahn family had pulled their security forces back to reinforce security at Emerald Mountain because of the funeral.

Or had Skylar’s standing in the family dropped, making him no longer worth protecting with those two bodyguards?

With that in mind, Joseph adjusted the thermometer and went over to investigate. The access code to Skylar’s hospital room had been changed back to the simple default numbers.

Joseph entered the room and found that no maids were inside. Only Skylar was there, still on an IV drip and mumbling incoherently to himself.

Skylar’s temperature was over 102 degrees Fahrenheit.

Joseph glanced at the bathroom. Even though no one was inside, the floor was wet.

On the table was a thermal flask with its lid open, as if someone had just opened it.

Joseph figured someone would be coming back soon, so he didn’t stay for long. He returned to the nurses’ station and found Jenna there.

He asked, “Why aren’t you trying to bring down Skylar’s fever?”

“Gemma and the others are in charge. She’s preparing the medication right now. She’ll be here soon to treat him.”

Jenna led Joseph to her office. After closing the door, she asked, “Did you see that? The bodyguards stationed outside Skylar’s door are gone. Want to guess what happened?”

“I don’t know what’s going on with the Zahns, so I don’t even have a starting point. I’ve got no clue.”

“Can’t you just take a guess?”

“Fine. Since Edmund Zahn passed away, everyone in his branch of the family has to step aside.”

“Not exactly. One of Skylar’s companies is being investigated for illegal activities. Since he’s one of the people involved, the police could question him at any time.”
