Chapter 517
“Jenna, you don’t have to sacrifice yourself for me. If the pressure gets to be too much, just turn me in. I’m not worthy of your trust,” thought Joseph.
No matter when his identity was exposed, he was no longer afraid. At worst, he would die. Perhaps death would be a kind of release.
After regaining his composure, Joseph headed into Yara’s ward. He could see that her complexion was poor. The more her illness progressed, the worse it became. If she hadn’t stubbornly refused, her leg would have been amputated the day before.
“Didn’t you just have a fall? Why are you acting as if you’ve been through some life-threatening illness? You even took several days off,” complained Yara.
Yara was happy upon seeing Joseph. At the same time, she was arrogant.
Joseph replied, “I just said that to cover up the truth. Actually, I got beaten up. I suffered internal injuries, so I had no choice but to rest. I didn’t announce it to everyone because I didn’t want to embarrass myself.”
Joseph knew Yara wasn’t worried about him. She just needed an excuse to start a conversation.
Yara snorted. “A nobody like you is with someone way out of your league. It would be stranger if you didn’t get beaten up. If I weren’t stuck in bed, I would beat you up myself.”
Yara found Joseph’s explanation believable. Not just Ivan; even the other men of the Zahn family probably hated that Joseph was pursuing Jenna. They might not kill him, but beating him up was fine.
Joseph joked, “I hope you recover soon too. If beating me up would help speed up your recovery, I would gladly volunteer.”
“You’re such a sweet talker. Since you’re here, explain my latest test results,” said Yara, feeling a bit better.
Other doctors sugarcoated everything, but Joseph seemed to be dumb. He had a habit of telling Yara the truth, and she preferred it that way.
As Joseph walked Yara through the test results, he evaluated how far her illness had progressed. Suddenly, he changed his mind. Initially, he had intended to keep pushing for amputation.
But now, Joseph and Jenna were facing trouble. Cora was also searching for him, waiting to settle old scores. So, he still needed to use Yara.
Joseph emphasized how dangerous Yara’s condition had become. She immediately looked worried. She seemed like she was on the verge of breaking down.
She questioned, “Am I really beyond saving?”
Upon hearing that, Joseph seized the opportunity to ask, “Where’s Jenna? Maybe she could come over and figure something out together.”
Yara responded, “Jenna is being held at Emerald Mountain. She won’t be coming back anytime soon. Right now, Gemma is in charge. Don’t worry about Jenna.
“Gemma may have studied overseas, but she isn’t as gifted in medicine as Jenna is. The medical sect won’t make things difficult for Jenna. If you want to see her again, you’ll just have to wait.”
“So, Gemma is Jenna’s senior,” mumbled Joseph.

Gemma pushed the door open and entered the ward. She chuckled and said, “Why are you talking behind my back, saying I’m not as good as Jenna? After everything I’ve done treating you, doesn’t your conscience hurt at all?”
Gemma was displeased with Yara’s remarks. Actually, she had spotted Joseph the moment he showed up. So, she followed him. When she heard him explain how critical Yara’s condition was, and seeing that Yara wasn’t angry with him, she became interested.
Yara shot back. “Did I say anything wrong? You’re just a big-chested doctor with no brains. Besides seducing my brother so that you can become my sister-in-law, what are you good at? You should just give up already.”
“Hey, there’s someone else here. Yara, I swear I’m going to rip that mouth of yours off,” shouted Gemma. She felt embarrassed as she was exposed in front of Joseph.
“Henry, don’t go easy on her. Treat her like a seductress. If she seduces you, just sleep with her,” said Yara, adding fuel to the fire.
