Chapter 529
“In any case, you’re in my hands now, Skylar. You won’t be strutting around for much longer. Once I’ve had my fun torturing you, I’ll finish you off!”
That was what Joseph told himself. He tried to stay level-headed, not letting circumstances dictate his emotions, and forced himself to look on the bright side.
While at work, he kept his mood in check as he played the part of his new identity.
Even though Jenna still wasn’t free, Joseph was really hitting his stride at the hospital. As time went on, Yara’s opinion of Joseph only improved, and she came to regard him as one of her own.
Gemma also became much friendlier toward Joseph. After that first drunken incident, they’d had a couple more drinking sessions, and she’d used the booze as an excuse to get a little handsy with him.
The thing was, Joseph couldn’t quite figure her out. She seemed intent to start something, but she neither had the nerve nor the intention to take the next step.
Of course, Joseph hadn’t crossed any lines either. He didn’t dare to use his drunken act as an excuse to do anything to her.
That was because, through their day-to-day interactions, he had learned that Gemma had collected a great deal of information about him.
This ranged from his medical case studies to, more notably, all the incidents involving him at the Traditional Medicine Center and Jenton University Hospital.
One time, when he was pretending to be drunk and Gemma was helping him change his clothes, she muttered something that made him realize he needed to be extra careful.
“This punk Henry is actually packing just as much as Joseph. If only Henry had even half of Joseph’s looks, he’d be perfect. Henry, you’re so ugly that you’re close to losing your right to reproduce!”
This was why Joseph had to be extra careful. He couldn’t afford to mess up and get caught slipping now.
One day, while Joseph was at the nurses’ station, an emergency call suddenly came from Skylar’s room. A bad feeling washed over him, and a second later, Gemma came jogging over, waving him to follow along.
The moment they burst into the room, they were hit with a chorus of machine alarms. Skylar was convulsing violently on the bed, and there were signs of vomit on both the sheets and the floor.
“Looks like someone actually made a move on this bastard. And they walked right into my trap,” Joseph thought.
Although Joseph couldn’t directly take part in the emergency treatment, he could still tell what was going on at a glance.
After a long, intense struggle, Gemma and the team were able to pull Skylar back from the danger zone temporarily, and everyone breathed easier.
Still, with Skylar’s progress from the past few days wiped away and his condition becoming even more critical, Gemma and the others felt like the weight of the world was back on their shoulders.
Even after holding a consultation, Gemma and the team still couldn’t come up with a real solution, so Gemma had no choice but to ask the medical sect for help. Reuben was scheduled to come over that afternoon.
Back in the office, Gemma just ended an international call. She had asked her mentors and professors abroad for

advice, but the conversation didn’t bring any breakthroughs.
During all this, Joseph got a chance to examine Skylar. Just as he had suspected, someone had poisoned Skylar. And the way the toxin acted and the resulting symptoms were exactly as he had expected.
Gemma called Joseph into the office and asked directly, “You’ve heard quite a bit about Skylar’s condition. Do you have any suggestions?”
Joseph replied, “Honestly, I could barely follow your discussion, let alone come up with a solution. That said, while I was searching for anything relevant, I came across a reported case from another hospital that’s somewhat similar to this one. Would you like to take a look?”
Gemma immediately nodded and asked for it, so Joseph went to print it out. Naturally, this was something he had prepared in advance, though he had refined it to better match Skylar’s situation.
