A Man with Nerves of Steel (Joseph Hart) novel Chapter 541

Chapter 541

“What’s wrong with you? Give me back my sunglasses!” With her back turned to Joseph, the blind woman stretched out her hand toward him for her sunglasses.

“Here. I’m sorry. I overstepped.” Snapping out of his shock, Joseph hurriedly handed them back to her.

“What’s wrong? Who bullied you?” The younger girl in the wheelchair quickly came out of her room/She had thought that Joseph was taking advantage of her sister, but that wasn’t the case.

“I’m fine. I dropped my glasses, and he helped me pick them up,” the blind woman replied calmly. She was a practical person. Joseph was a generous client and had always behaved himself.

Had it been anyone else, they would probably have expected something in return for the money they paid. Neither she nor her sister had many means of making a living. To survive in this world, she had long since learned to swallow her pride and endure humiliation when necessary.

“I see. Hey! What are you doing, you pervert?” The younger sister was still eyeing Joseph suspiciously and was about to question him when he suddenly grabbed her knee and rolled up her pant leg.

He then began examining both her legs and feet with his hands.

Startled, she raised her hand to hit him, but being confined to her wheelchair made it difficult to keep her balance while striking him. In the end, all she could do was protest loudly.

“Don’t touch my sister! If you want some fun, come to me! I’ll do whatever you want. Just don’t hurt her. She’s still young,” the blind woman said. Hearing the anger in her sister’s voice, she assumed Joseph was harassing her. In her panic, the only thing she could think of was offering herself in exchange.

“Quiet! I’m examining her injuries.” Joseph’s sharp rebuke immediately silenced both sisters.

After examining the bones in her legs, he held the younger sister’s wrist and felt her pulse.

There were no unnecessary movements this time. Sensing that he was genuinely examining her, the younger sister quieted down and asked her sister to do the same.

Once he finished, Joseph pointed to the younger sister’s chest. “Your patella… did you donate it willingly, or was it taken from you by force? And that wound there. Was it caused by a knife or some other weapon?”

“Who are you?” The younger sister, Alice Pembroke, looked at Joseph wearily. He had merely touched her briefly and taken her pulse, yet he already understood the condition of her body with astonishing accuracy. She couldn’t help but be more cautious around him.

Joseph replied, “Don’t treat me like a bad person. I’m a doctor. If I can’t even identify injuries like this, then I’m a pretty useless doctor.”

Joseph then turned to the blind woman, Beatrice Pembroke. “The tissue around your eye sockets was treated very crudely. It doesn’t look like the work of a hospital. If I’m right, your eyes were gouged out.

“In your case, the only way you’ll ever see again is if your original eyes are somehow recovered or if someone donates a perfectly compatible pair of eyes.”

The Pembroke sisters were stunned into silence.

Joseph sighed. “Right now, I don’t have much. Even if I want to help you, there’s only so much I can do. But if you’re willing to trust me, then wait patiently. When I have the means to do so, I’ll try to treat both of you.”

Alice asked, “Why are you treating us so well? Who exactly are you?”

Joseph said, “Don’t think of me as a good person, but don’t think of me as a bad one, either. Just think of me as a doctor who still has some conscience. Yes, I still have a conscience, just not very much of it.”

Joseph pulled out a cigarette, gave it a sniff, and started to put it back. But when Alice told him it was fine, he lit it and took a slow drag.
