Chapter 542
Joseph spent the next few days lying low before finally receiving a message from Jenna telling him to return to the Traditional Medicine Center.
When he saw her again, her face was noticeably paler, but she looked energetic and bore no visible signs of injury
From the undisguised joy in her eyes, Joseph couldn’t help but wonder if Jenna had actually fallen for him. If that were true, then at least he’d know she never betrayed him.
“I thought their test would involve draining every last drop of your blood,” Joseph joked.
Jenna rolled her eyes. “They made me memorize the family rules nonstop. Then they had me copy them by hand. After that, I suffered through endless rounds of questioning where they tried to catch me in a lie.
“One round wasn’t enough, so they’d start all over again. This mental torture is far worse than any kind of/ physical torture they could come up with.”
Joseph’s carefree attitude was exactly what Jenna expected from him.
He asked, “So how did you get through it?”
She shrugged. “I kept telling myself I couldn’t do anything that would make you laugh at me. That was enough.”
She continued, “Hey, old man. You’ve got more than a decade on me, and I’ll admit your medical skills are better than mine. But don’t tell me you have to beat me at everything.”
Joseph smiled. “You already called me an old man. You’ve got youth on your side, so you win.”
The exchange felt comfortably familiar. With Jenna back at the hospital and looking after him again, Joseph figured he could go back to quietly stirring up trouble.
Just then, Gemma arrived. The moment she saw Jenna and Joseph together, a sour wave of jealousy washed over her. “So that’s how it is? You’ve barely even reunited, and you’re already acting all lovey dovey. Careful now-you might lose control and treat the rest of us to a live show.”
“Gemma!” Jenna protested, blushing immediately.
Although she and Joseph hadn’t done anything intimate, merely having it mentioned was enough to embarrass
her.
Then, she quickly slipped back into work mode. She was there to assist Gemma, so Gemma would be in charge.
Gemma waved her hand dismissively. “Please. Those old fossils from the medical sect just love putting on a show. They know the extent of my abilities. Jenna, don’t listen to them. You’ll be the one calling the shots. Henry and I will back you up.”
Jenna didn’t argue. In any case, when there were any major decisions, the two of them would discuss them together.
After the work was handed over, Jenna wanted to familiarize herself with the current situation, so she took Joseph along on ward rounds.
Once they’d finished checking the general wards, they entered the intensive care unit.
There, Joseph saw Cora stepping out of Yara’s room.
When their eyes met, Joseph immediately noticed the displeasure in Cora’s expression. “Ms. Lowell, we meet
1/2
again. Still want me out of your sight? There’s a new person in charge of the department now, so you won’t be able to come and go as you please anymore.”
Surprisingly, Jenna played along. “From now on, no unauthorized visitors are allowed in the ICU without my approval. Cora, you shouldn’t linger here. Please leave.”
“You pathetic little lapdog.” Cora shot Joseph an icy glare.
“After you. Right, have your daughter apologize to nie. Otherwise, I might start spreading rumors.” He wasn’t intimidated in the slightest. What could Cora do to him now? Kill him? He wasn’t afraid of that anymore.
He’d given her plenty of time, but all she wanted to do was make money. She refused to resolve things with Skylar at all. Judging from her behavior, she’d effectively accepted the truth about the children’s paternity.
She had accepted it, yet still refused to divorce him. She wanted the best of everything.
