A Man with Nerves of Steel (Joseph Hart) novel Chapter 560

Chapter 560

Joseph was referring to the poison Jenson had suffered from. The toxin in Jenna’s body was similar in nature, though not exactly the same.

The stronger her feelings for the other person, the deeper the addiction would become. The more she craved him, the harder it would be to break free. Eventually, it would drain her body completely until she was entirely incapable of love.

It was a poison that bloomed as a romance reached its end, leaving its victim utterly devastated.

Jenna flashed him a radiant smile. “I knew it. My medical skills aren’t as good as yours. If I can’t cure it, then surely you can. Joseph, does this count as another medical duel between us? Except this time, I’m the patient. I you win, I win. If you lose, we’re both finished.”

Joseph raised an eyebrow. “Are you saying you’ll betray me if I don’t cure you?”

“If you can’t cure me, I’ll fall in love with Harold,” Jenna replied. “I’ll become hopelessly devoted to him, so why would I still care about you?

“We’re partners. Protecting each other is what partners do. I’m bringing you into the Zahn family and helping you uncover what’s really going on between Cora and Skylar. In return, you get me out of this mess. My payment to you is my trust-and myself.”

This time, Jenna didn’t bother beating around the bush. She gazed at Joseph with undisguised affection, resting her chin in her hands. She looked unbelievably cute.

Joseph scoffed. “Have you gone blind? I’m over a decade older than you, and you’re attracted to me?”

Jenna giggled. “As long as you’re a man, I’m fine with it. It doesn’t bother me that you’re a little older. Isn’t it nice to have someone experienced take the lead while I just sit back and enjoy?”

“There was a woman who thought the same,” Joseph said quietly. “But something happened to her. I’m nothing but bad luck. Anyone who gets close to me ends up suffering.”

“Who?” Jenna suddenly sensed a hint of danger in his words.

He shook his head. “You’re better off not knowing. Forget it. Let’s focus on curing you first. Otherwise, you might betray me at any moment.”

“I would not!” Jenna crossed her arms, clearly offended that Joseph would doubt her. She had always prided herself on her strong self-control.

Since Jenna hadn’t actually taken that final step with anyone, Joseph decided there was no point in dwelling on it. Instead, he focused on figuring out the poison.

Jenna closed the door before lying down on the couch, shifting into the position necessary for Joseph to examine the mark the old witch had left on her.

Joseph suddenly understood what Gemma had been talking about. Once he saw it, he became even more confident that he could cure Jenna.

He was also amazed by just how twisted their methods were.

It was a form of parasitic poison.

A male and female pair of parasites were cultivated separately. The female was implanted in the woman, and the

male in the man. Once both parasites matured, they would release hormones that naturally drew the two hosts toward one another.

Joseph suspected that the old woman first tried to force the two together in the bath. When the encounter failed, she resorted to the parasite.

Joseph collected a small sample and sent it off for analysis. The results were exactly as he had predicted-the parasite had a seven-day maturation cycle.

In other words, if Jenna couldn’t purge it in time, she would gradually become obsessed with Harold. The next time she encountered him, the parasite’s biological instincts would overwhelm her and drive her straight into his

arms.

Faced with that kind of biological compulsion, Jenna’s claims of strong self-control meant very little.

Now that he understood how the parasite functioned, Joseph not only formulated a cure but also hatched a fathe mischievous plan.

Night fell quickly. Joseph knew he was being watched, so he had Jenna run interference while he slipped out of the hospital.
