Joseph had restored his original appearance, surrounded only by the few people he trusted completely, like Katie.

His hands were injured, so under normal circumstances, he wouldn’t be able to exert much force, let alone perform delicate surgical work. But Joseph had his ways. By using a technique similar to a local anesthetic block, he temporarily suppressed the pain and restored enough function to operate.

He needed the use of both hands not only because the procedure demanded it, but also to maintain his disguise as Henry.

The patient, an important client of Katie’s, needed a cardiac stent implanted. Since this individual could significantly contribute to the Gould family’s growth, there was absolutely no room for error. At this point, Joseph was the only surgeon Katie trusted.

Because Cora had taken over Joseph’s clinic, they couldn’t perform the procedure there. After discussing it with Joseph, Katie arranged for the surgery to take place at Jenton University Hospital instead. That setup would also make postoperative recovery and observation much easier.

While the operation was in full swing, Cora was gathering every piece of information she could get her hands on. Yet, she couldn’t find any sign of Joseph.

She thought bitterly that Henry must have lied to her.

By 10:00 pm, the displeasure on her face was obvious. After all, she had promised Selena and Kimberley that she would bring Joseph home that night.

She hurried to the hospital. If Joseph showed up, she was certain she would find him-the hospital was a relatively small, enclosed space, after all. And once she found him, she was equally confident she could drag him back home.

They hadn’t seen each other in days. She refused to believe he didn’t miss her.

As the night deepened, the hospital corridors emptied out. Yet, Cora still couldn’t find him. She searched the building from top to bottom multiple times, but eventually hit a dead end. Disappointed, she was forced to leave.

When she returned home, she showered and changed. As she lay awake in bed, a loud crash echoed through the house, signaling that Selena had shattered another flowerpot.

Cora was about to get out of bed and march upstairs to give Selena a proper scolding, but then she stopped. She didn’t exactly have the moral high ground tonight, having failed to bring Joseph back as promised.

That damned Joseph had the nerve to burn down her building, but lacked the guts to come out and face the consequences. What

a coward.

Then, her mind drifted to the paternity tests. The daughters she had raised all these years weren’t Joseph’s biological children.

She frowned. How was she supposed to clear up that misunderstanding with him?

After a moment, she dismissed the thought. Joseph didn’t deserve an explanation from her. He had burned down her building and caused catastrophic financial losses. He had crossed a line she could never forgive.

But now that she couldn’t find him, she had nowhere to direct her conflicting feelings of love and hatred.

She also had to admit something else–without Joseph, the house lacked nothing materially. She had hired more staff, and her parents had moved in. There were more than enough people around to make the place lively. And yet, the warmth was gone.

Sometimes, the house felt almost unbearably cold.

If her parents and children weren’t there, she probably wouldn’t even want to come home.

Meanwhile, back at the hospital, Joseph and his team worked flawlessly together to complete the operation. The patient was transferred to the observation ward, and Joseph accepted the family’s gracious invitation to have breakfast together in the department’s main office.
