The moment Joseph left the hospital room, Gemma summoned him to her office

Seeing the hesitation in her eyes he said, “If you’re wondering whether Mr. Zahn should have his prostate checked, I don’t think it’s necessary.

“Given the state he’s in right now, he clearly can’t get it up anymore. He only asked you to do that because he wanted to test your loyalty.”

Gemma was embarrassed when she realized he already knew exactly what was going on. Biting her lower lip, she admitted, “It was the same thing for Jenna and me back in the day. The Zahns thoroughly investigated me and constantly tested my loyalty. Skylar was the one assigned to test me.”

She wasn’t exactly being completely honest with him. Did she really think he didn’t know the full story?

The truth was, Joseph knew plenty about Gemma. He had already learned several of the Zahn family and medical sect’s darkest secrets from Jenna, Yara, and a few others.

Gemma had been put through their test twice, which meant there were at least two men within the family she couldn’t say no to. One of them was Skylar. Aside from Pamela and Gemma herself, very few people probably even knew who the second man was, since it had happened so many years ago.

There were rumors that the other man was Edmund, but Joseph couldn’t help but wonder if it had actually been Owen.

Looking at Gemma, Joseph realized he might be overthinking things. He had taken on this “Henry Jebb” identity as a temporary disguise to get close to the Zahns. Once he had dealt with those who had humiliated him, he would no longer need it.

Once he went back to being Joseph Hart again, he might not even stay in Jenton. He might simply choose to spend the rest of his days peacefully at the monastery.

Joseph knew perfectly well that Gemma would never actually fall for him. She was only giving him what he wanted now so she could gradually gain control over him.

Eventually, she would try to use him to handle the dirty work she couldn’t do herself-and those tasks were bound to be highly risky.

They were both just using each other as a means to an end. That was why she didn’t care that he was ugly, and he didn’t care that she was fake.

Joseph pulled his thoughts back to the present. “The truth is, given Mr. Zahn’s current situation, he can barely take care of himself. Even if you don’t help him with this, he won’t hold it against you.

“Besides, he’s got plenty of women in his life-Madeline, and even Cora. They might come over and help him regain his confidence instead.”

Seeing Gemma fall silent, he pressed on, “I probably shouldn’t say this, but from a doctor’s perspective, unless an elite doctor like Joseph Hart intervenes, Mr. Zahn is unlikely to make a full recovery or ever be discharged.

“We also have to consider what he’ll face if he does get out of the hospital. I don’t think you should stay by his side.”

“What will he face once he’s out? What do you mean?” Gemma asked, furrowing her brow.

“Mr. Zahn has three daughters, all three of whom are Cora’s. Even if he makes a full recovery, I’m sure he’ll settle down with her permanently. I highly doubt she’d be okay with him seeing you on the side.”

“Oh. Then what do you think I should do?”

“If you don’t want to treat Mr. Zahn, let the others do it. Many of Reuben’s students are eager to prove themselves. Why don’t you just pass the responsibility to them?”
