Skylar said, “I can’t believe so much has happened while I’ve been unconscious. With everything changing so fast, this should’ve been our chance to make our move. Instead, I’m stuck here in this hospital bed, barely hanging on. I can’t do a damn thing.”

Joseph, with a wry detachment, mused inwardly that it was his fault Skylar couldn’t live the life he wanted- and he almust sounded amused at the thought.

Skylar’s frustration was infectious, bringing a lump to Yara’s throat. “I might still have to get my leg amputated. I’m finished.”

Skylar glared at Joseph. “What the hell are you people from the medical sect doing? We’ve invested so much in all of you over the years. Now it’s time for you to prove your worth. We need treatment as soon as possible.”

Joseph feigned helplessness. “Whatever you say, Mr. Zahn. We’ll do everything we can to treat you. You’ll make a full recovery.”

“What good is all that talk?” Skylar remained displeased.

“You’re right, Mr. Zahn. But I’m new to the medical sect. I don’t have much say around here, so I wouldn’t dare make promises I can’t keep.”

“Don’t worry about that, Henry,” Yara interjected, putting in a good word for him. “Just focus on your work. You have a solid foundation in medicine. Even though you just joined the sect, I’m sure you’ll rise above the others in no time.”

To her, this doctor was her best chance at recovery.

“I’ll do my best,” was all Joseph said.

Then, Yara suddenly asked, “Skylar, do you want to try Serum No. 5 and see what happens?”

Joseph internally raised an eyebrow. Could they have developed Serum No. 5 in their biolab?

Skylar shot Joseph with a dark warning. “If you tell anyone what you just heard, I’ll make sure you disappear.”

“Mr. Zahn, I’m one of you. I know what I should and shouldn’t say,” Joseph replied quickly.

“Skylar, Henry can be trusted.” Yara vouched for him again.

Skylar scowled. Yara had stood up for this nobody again, yet she hadn’t run a background check or tested his loyalty before deciding he was trustworthy. There was no other explanation-Yara was fetting her emotions dictate her judgment. Skylar realized that in her current vulnerable state, she was far too quick to trust.

“Thank you, Yara,” Joseph said. “I won’t let you down.”

He then looked at Skylar. “The truth is, there’s someone else in Jenton you could consider. I’m talking about Joseph Hart. If you can find him and convince him to let Cora go, things could still turn around.”

“And how am I supposed to find him?” Skylar demanded. “How do I get him to agree to that?”

Joseph offered a suggestion. “The key to all of this is Cora. If you have her divorce Joseph and make it public that the two of you are together, Joseph will have no choice but to accept it. What could he even do about it?”

Skylar shook his head. “Things between Cora and me aren’t that simple. We might have three kids together, but that doesn’t mean she’ll marry me. It’s a nice idea, but let’s just leave it at that.”

Skylar then winced, complaining about a sore throat.

Joseph briefly examined him. “He just woke up, and all this talking has been too much for his throat. He needs to rest.”

As Joseph wheeled Yara back to her room, he couldn’t help but ask, “Yara, what’s going on? Cora has three kids with Mr. Zahn, yet she still won’t marry him? What’s the story there?”
