Chapter 579

Meanwhile, Joseph managed to shake off tris tai! Since Gemma wasn’t at Jenna’s house, he didn’t bother going over.
Instead, he headed to Beatrice’s place. She and Alice were both disabled and seemed to be keeping a low profile for some reason. Since they rarely socialized, their apartment was the perfect place for him to lay low.
Besides, he could enjoy a massage and that rare, little known technique for groin therapy.
Joseph was already 40 years old. As a middle-aged man, he couldn’t push himself the way he used to. He needed to take better care of his health and conserve his energy.
The next day, he went to work. Turning on his phone, he saw that Natalie had messaged him in the middle of the night. She wanted to visit Skylar at the hospital and demanded that Joseph make the arrangements.
Joseph sent a tentative reply and received a response almost immediately.
Natalie wrote, “I’m here. Can you arrange it?”
She seemed very eager to see Skylar.
Joseph replied, “Money talks. Pay up, and I’ll decide when you get to meet him, where, and for how long. If you want, you can even take him outside.”
“How much do you want?” she asked.
“How much can you give?” Joseph shot back.
“Don’t be greedy,” Natalie warned.
“I heard your father gave you quite a bit of money. You’re rich now, so why shouldn’t I ask for a premium? I’d be a fool not to, especially since you’re so desperate to see him and have cash to spare.”
“Hmph. I’ll find another way. Bye!”
“By asking your mother?” Joseph typed back. “Sorry, but she already gave strict instructions to keep you away from Skylar. If you don’t believe me, go ahead and try your luck.”
Joseph stopped texting her after that. He was almost certain she would still try to sneak in.
As far as Skylar was concerned, Natalie was his biological daughter. Since she him not to take advantage of her.
was easy to manipulate, there was no reason for
Still, they were biologically related. If Skylar realized his days were numbered, he might view Natalie as the only way for his legacy to live on and hand everything over to her.
Joseph knew Natalie too well. She never did anything unless there was something in it for her. She desperately wanted to break free from Cora’s grip, and securing Skylar’s fortune was the only way she could ever go toe to toe with Cora.
Money and power were the keys to her freedom.
Joseph made his rounds with Gemma and the rest of the staff. As expected, once they reached Skylar’s room, one of Reuben’s students took over as the attending physician, giving Joseph and Gemma the pertect excuse to slip away.
Given his relationship with Jenna and Gemma, it didn’t really matter who treated Skylar the patient would still be under his watchful eye.
After finishing the tasks Gemma had assigned him, Joseph spent the rest of his shift slacking off. Eventually, he wandered into Yara’s hospital room and dismissed her caregiver.
Yara was hooked up to an IV drip. Not feeling tired, she was currently brainstorming ways to make money.

Glancing at her screen, Joseph noticed her stock portfolio was performing exceptionally well. In fact, she had made half a million dollars just the day before
And that was probably only one of her accounts.
It was no exaggeration to say Yara raked in a fortune daily. She certainly knew how to play the market.
Joseph briefly examined Yara, checking the progress of her treatment and offering some reassurance. He was just about to leave when she spoke up.
“You should try investing in stocks again. You could still make a few bucks.”
“Forget it. I don’t have a head for business,” Joseph replied. “It wasn’t until I stepped into Cora’s office that I realized I’m exactly where I belong. I’m just a doctor who’s good at treating patients. Outside of that, I’m hopeless.”
He was speaking from experience. He had finally accepted that not everyone could get rich just by wanting it badly enough.
Wealth gravitated toward those who knew how to manage it. Money had its own set of rules, and those who understood the game knew exactly how to bend those rules to line their own pockets.
Joseph might be eager to make something of himself, and he was certainly capable of spotting a promising opportunity, but he had no idea how to actually capitalize on it.
Right now, Cora was the one pulling the strings and controlling the flow of money in Jenton.
“My life is pretty simple,” Joseph continued. “Just look at how ugly I am. No one is ever going to marry me.
“I know I can’t afford to spend decades paying off a mortgage. I might as well just focus on improving my medical skills. Saving lives and knowing my patients appreciate what I do is more than enough for me.”
“What makes you think no one would marry you just because you’re ugly?” Yara asked. “Don’t you think you’re being a little pessimistic?”
“Even if someone did marry me, she’d probably be ugly too. If we’re both ugly, our kid would definitely be ugly. I don’t want my future child to go through the same tragedy I did. It’d be irresponsible of me to let that happen. Let me be the only ugly one, I’ll make sure the tragic bloodline ends with me.”
“You..” Yara let out a chuckle. “Your logic might be twisted, but you’re not completely wrong. You are hideously ugly. Maybe it does run in the family.”
