Yara knew that gaining power could bring out a different side of a man, so she wasn’t too surprised by Joseph’s behavior. In fact, the way he looked down on Cora only made her feel more secure. She didn’t have to worry about Cora taking him away from her.

“They’re the Dixon family from Larkton. They’re excellent fighters, so don’t mess with them unless you want to get hurt.”

“We’re in Jenton. Do we still have to play by their rules? Don’t worry. If they mess with me, I’d find a way to get back at them,” Joseph said.

The truth was, plenty of outsiders had made their way into Jenton. Now that the Lowells and Zarins were at each other’s throats, those outsiders were watching from the sidelines, waiting to see which side to take.

What Joseph wanted was to stir things up and let them fight it out.

The Zahns ruled Jenton, with the Lowells right behind them. The pecking order was practically set in stone, and the resources had already been carved up.

If Joseph wanted to get ahead, he had to tear down the entire hierarchy and redistribute those resources. But if he took away what they had, they would fight as if their lives depended on it. Only by stirring up enough chaos could he get the Zahns to tear down the hierarchy themselves.

Before leaving, Joseph asked, “Cora said she never slept with your brother and refuses to admit that Natalie is his daughter. You’ll have to ask him if that’s true.

“I just don’t know whether to believe her. Is it possible your brother never slept with her? Or is she just refusing to admit it happened?”

“You’re a doctor. Think about it. If they never slept together, how could they have had children? Don’t believe anything Cora says. She’s really cunning. Once she gets you under her control, you’re screwed. Just look at her damn husband-she had him completely fooled.”

“You’re right!” Joseph let out a chuckle and left the room. He didn’t fully believe Yara, yet he couldn’t dismiss everything she said either.

He thought about how the housekeeper and even the driver were secretly working for the Zahns. If that was true, then Skylar and Yara had all the leverage over him and Cora all along.

If Yara was capable of drugging him and making him infertile, she could just as easily have slipped something into his or Cora’s food or drinks to knock them out, allowing Skylar to enter and have his way with her.

The thought filled Joseph with rage and humiliation. The more he dwelled on it, the more terrifying it seemed, and a chill ran down his spine.

Joseph wanted revenge. Now it was his turn to operate from the shadows, while Skylar and Yara were out in the open. He intended to play them for fools.

He returned to his office and continued reviewing the cases in his department. He even pulled up the records of a few people he knew, such as Bruce and Charlie. He wanted to know how their treatments were progressing.

But Bruce and Charlie weren’t in the ICU. Arthur was overseeing their treatment and had arranged for them to stay in the same VIP ward as Michael.

If Bruce and Charlie were in his department, Joseph would have thrown them out himself. But since Arthur was calling the shots, Joseph couldn’t just do anything he wanted to them.
