Joseph didn’t expect Helen to take his side. He’d come to treat her because it was his duty as a doctor, and they were still family after all. Once the treatment was over, he left.

When Cora heard the news, she hurried from home to the hospital. Even though Joseph was nowhere to be seen, she found ointment on Helen’s face, and next to Helen was a note with the doctor’s instructions. Cora recognized – the handwriting as Joseph’s.

Cora had her people look into it, but the only camera to pick up anything suspicious was the one in the elevator. None of the cameras in the hallway had captured Joseph at all. She was starting to suspect that someone at the hospital was helping him evade surveillance.

Cora had already positioned her people to stake out Katie’s clinic. She never expected Joseph to show up at the hospital and treat Helen instead.

Joseph was clearly trying to avoid Cora. He didn’t want to see her, and there was nothing she could do about it.

She had the doctor examine Helen. After learning that Joseph hadn’t hurt Helen or interfered with her treatment, she finally relaxed.

Once Helen was awake, Cora had the doctors remove the medicinal paste. The rash, which had been badly inflamed, had visibly improved.

Without a word, Helen went to the bathroom. Just as Joseph had predicted, her stool was black. He’d explained that he’d drawn the toxins down into her lower abdomen, and all she had to do was flush them out.

Helen thought to herself, “Joseph really knows what he’s doing!”

Back in the hospital room, Helen suddenly had a much better appetite and started digging into her food.

“Mom, don’t eat so much. Your body needs time to recover.” Seeing this, Cora quickly tried to stop her.

“You don’t get it. Joseph said I need to eat more fiber to help with my digestion and flush out the toxins.”

Helen ignored Cora’s advice. Once she was done eating, she began walking around the room to help her food settle.

Cora dismissed the caregiver. Once they were alone, she asked, “Where’s Joe? How is he doing? Did he say where he’s staying? When is he coming back? If he’s not coming back, I’ll go find him myself.”

“I didn’t even get to see his face. He was wearing a mask, but it was definitely him. He didn’t tell me anything about himself. The only thing he had to say about you was that he wanted a divorce.”

“He wants a divorce? What’s he up to now? Did you ask him why he set my building on fire?” Cora suddenly grew angry. She had many questions for Joseph, but she couldn’t even get the chance to confront him.

“He came here to treat me. Why would I ever bring up the fire?”

Helen wasn’t a fool. If she asked Joseph why he had set the building on fire and caused the Lowells to suffer such huge losses, he would leave immediately. He would never treat her again.

Helen said, “Cora, Joseph’s actually not asking for much. All he wants is a divorce, and he doesn’t want a single cent from you.

“He caused us such a huge loss by setting that building on fire, so he’s the one who messed up. You could use this opportunity to get a divorce; he wouldn’t dare to ask for compensation. It’s a win-win situation, don’t you think?”

“What nonsense! I’ll never divorce him. I don’t care if he tears our family apart. I’ll never agree to it!”
