Chapter 665
Alice’s recovery was also going smoothly. Joseph found the two women a new place to stay and had Dolly arrange
for them to enter the sanatorium.
A few days later, an unfamiliar middle-aged man came looking for Joseph and asked for Alice. The man suspected that the Traditional Medicine Center was hiding Alice and demanded that Joseph hand the girl over.
When Joseph denied knowing anything, the man refused to accept it. Joseph promptly called the police. At that point, the middle-aged man suddenly changed his tune, saying he wasn’t looking for anyone anymore. Then, he/ turned around and made a run for it.
That guy was an expert, but he seemed afraid of being investigated.
Joseph assessed the man’s condition. His voice was deep and powerful. With his steady breathing and nimble movements, he was most likely a highly trained martial artist.
Joseph had someone locate Alice and ask her whether the man was friend or foe.
Only then did Alice admit that the man had been following them. His purpose was to force them back under control and make sure they continued suffering.
Alice was actually from a powerful family in a different region. One of their elders had lost his claim to the family’s succession and had subsequently been persecuted by the opposing faction. As the elder’s descendants, Alice and the others had also suffered.
They had their limbs broken, knees destroyed, and eyes gouged out. In the struggle for power, the victors showed no mercy. And more often than not, the most vicious enemies were the people who had once been family.
That day, Joseph received a message from Katie. Paula had been coming to her clinic for several days straight, insisting on seeing him. So, Joseph made the necessary arrangements and went over.
When he met Katie, he used his original appearance.
“Joseph, you’re here!” Katie hadn’t expected Joseph to actually show up, let alone walk straight through the clinic’s front entrance. She still didn’t know exactly where Joseph had been hiding, but she was certain he was still in Jenton. Knowing that he hadn’t left her gave her something to hold on to.
“Joseph.” Paula noticed that Joseph looked pretty much the same as before. He simply seemed a little fairer now, with a more restrained demeanor that made it difficult to tell what was going on inside his head.
After exchanging greetings, they sat down and drank some coffee.
Joseph got straight to the point. “Why did you want to see me?”
Paula said, “I came on behalf of Belinda to apologize for all the trouble she’s caused you. She wants things to return to the good relationship you two had after your first deal was completed. She’s regretted getting so deeply involved with Cora during this period.”
Joseph said, “Belinda used Cora’s connections to stabilize her position within the Towne family. I couldn’t give her that, so it’s understandable that she chose to side with Cora.”
Paula replied, “But all that was built on the foundation you laid for her. Aside from Barry and Jonas, she wouldn’t have had even the slightest chance of establishing herself within the Towne family without the opportunities and connections you created for her. Otherwise, she’d be completely at their mercy.”
Joseph shrugged. “That was simply a mutually beneficial partnership. It’s nothing worth mentioning. Naturally,

I’ll accept her if she’s willing to abandon Cora and help me again.
But right now, my reputation is in tatters. I’m probably Jenton’s biggest laughingstock. If she sides with me, she’ll only become a laughingstock herself.”
Paula shook her head. “No, Joseph. Out of everyone we know, you’re the one we admire most. You were simply too kind before, and people took advantage of that kindness. But those petty schemers can’t exploit you forever. Good- deeds will be rewarded. You’ll get what you deserve.”
Joseph said, “Enough with the empty words. I know exactly what my needs are.”
