A Man with Nerves of Steel (Joseph Hart) novel Chapter 696

Chapter 696

After making sure Cheryl was in a safe place to talk, Joseph got straight to the point. “Someone slipped Jayden a slow-acting poison. Was it you?”

Cheryl was surprised, but she answered honestly, “No. I’m just a single mother trying to survive. I don’t have that kind of reach. Right now, I’m barely keeping my head above water in Larkton. I wouldn’t dare make a move on your turf.”

Joseph wasn’t entirely convinced. “Then is there a chance that Jayden’s enemies came to Jenton, made their moye here, and are just using me as the fall guy?”

“That’s quite possible. Let me put together a list of suspects I can think of and send their info over. You should watch your back.”

Joseph told Cheryl to hurry. He was sick of taking the fall for other people’s crap. Plus, he wanted to use the real culprit to his advantage.

After hanging up, he weighed his options for a moment, then used a burner phone to call Cora’s personal number

As soon as the call connected, he asked, “Cora, what’s the holdup with the divorce? Why are you still dragging your feet instead of signing the papers?

“I know you’ve already sent Natalie and the others to the hospital to meet their biological father. What, are you planning to have two husbands? Do you have a death wish?”

Cora immediately replied, “Honey, it really is you! I miss you so much. Where are you? I’ll go see you immediately!”

“Where am I? If I tell you where I am, would you even dare come? Aren’t you worried this is a trap to lure you away so I can stir up trouble? If you aren’t, then come. I’m actually near your home right now. I just saw your dad stretching outside.”

“Honey, don’t do anything crazy! Let me be honest with you-I didn’t send the children to see Skylar so they could acknowledge him as their father.

“They aren’t his kids. They’re yours. I only did it to provoke you, hoping you’d show up so we could clear the air and stop misunderstanding each other. Let’s just get back together, please?”

“Are you out of your mind? Thanks to you, the whole world thinks I’m an arsonist, an ungrateful backstabber, and a pathetic cuck who raised another man’s kids!

“You people completely ruined my life. How am I supposed to show my face now? And you want to get back together? What kind of fantasy world are you living in?

\ “I already told you-I’ve become a monk, and I go by Eberhard now.”

“This is all a huge misunderstanding! Just come back, and we’ll face this together! I’ll be right there with you to set the record straight. No one will judge us or point fingers.

“You know I love you, and I know you still love me. Let’s just stop torturing each other like this. We can work things out peacefully and go back to loving each other. Honey, I love you, so please come back!”

“Cora, if you don’t sign those divorce papers soon, all those lies you spread about me are going to become a reality. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

“W-Why are you like this? You were never this way before.”

“Don’t talk to me about the past. You’d love nothing more than for me to go back to the way I was, wouldn’t you? Back when you could fool around with all those men while I played the idiot, knowing nothing and treating you like some pure, faithful woman…

“Give me a break! You are filthy, Cora. Wake up. Your days of living the good life are over. For every bit of fun you had before, there’ll be just as much pain waiting for you from now on!”

“D-Didn’t you become a monk? How can you be so vicious? Have you lost your mind?”

“Heh. Are you trying to lecture me? Unfortunately, our god beat you to it. Without the strength to crush evil, compassion means nothing. But letting evil go unchecked isn’t compassion either.
