Chapter 697
ra asked Joseph not to hang up, but the call eventually disconnected anyway. She frantically called back, but couldn’t get through. When she tried again, she realized that his phone was already switched off.
Still paranoid that Joseph was going to retaliate, she rushed out of the company to get home. Only after seeing that everything was fine did she finally relax.
But that relief quickly faded into a deep sense of defeat and disappointment. Things had gone completely off the rails, and she no longer had any control over what happened next.
“If I don’t do something, Joseph will never come back. He’s somewhere nearby, with people protecting him, and he has the patience to lay low forever. There’s no way I can find him unless he wants to be found. But what can possibly do to make him happy?”
Cora took a walk around the perimeter of her home, but there was no sign of Joseph. She had no choice but to go back inside.
When Helen noticed how defeated she looked, she asked, “What’s wrong? You came back but didn’t do a thing, and now you keep looking around. What are you looking for?”
“I just got off the phone with Joseph. He said he was nearby, but he was just lying.”
Cora stared out the front door. This was an upscale residential neighborhood with very little foot traffic. If Joseph were really lurking around, he would’ve been spotted.
Helen was surprised. “What does he want?”
“What else could he want besides a divorce? The second I refused, he hung up. Mom, tell me, what am I supposed to do?”
Helen answered bluntly, “Honestly, after things have gotten this bad between you two, you should just get the divorce. You’d be free, and Joseph wouldn’t be able to use the marriage to hold you back.
“If you just stay out of his way and stop crossing his boundaries, he won’t go off the deep end and come after you.”
“I didn’t do anything wrong to him! I didn’t…”
“Cora, you need to understand that different people have different boundaries when it comes to certain things. You are Joseph’s woman, and he is never going to be okay with you getting cozy with another man. The second you cross that line, even if you didn’t actually sleep with the guy, you’re already tainted in Joseph’s mind.
“Can you even wrap your head around that kind of rigid, narrow-minded thinking?”
“I… No matter what you say, I’m not getting a divorce! I didn’t do anything to betray him!” Cora stubbornly
insisted.
Helen sighed inwardly. Cora’s stubbornness was beyond her comprehension, Knowing there was no arguing with Cora, she asked, “So how do you plan to win him back, then?” ”
“I don’t know how to convince him. I can’t even see him face to face. But there is one thing I’m going to do. I’m going to cut ties and separate from the Lowell family.”
Helen gasped. “You want to cut ties?”
“Yes. I love Joseph, and he loves me, but I know he’s never been comfortable with how closely I’ve been tied to the Lowell family.

“I’ve had time to reflect, and I realize I’ve indeed been neglecting his feelings for the sake of this family over the years Besides, the way the Lowell family has treated me lately has really hurt me.
“In their eyes, I’m just a married relative who doesn’t belong anymore. No matter how much money I make for them, it’s ‘the family’s money.’
“And no matter how much wealth the Lowells have, it has absolutely nothing to do with me. So if that’s how it is, – I’m done being part of the Lowell family.”
As Cora spoke, she recalled what Henry had told her and decided that the only way to make Joseph believe her was to prove her sincerity through her actions.
