Joseph pulled back the curtain slightly, taking a quick look outside. “For years now, the Zahns have had moles planted around you, from your housekeepers to employees within the Lowell Group. Skylar could come and go in your home like it was his own.

“Cora and I had a normal sex life, but she just couldn’t get pregnant by me. Do you know why? Because they slipped me drugs that made me infertile.”

Helen was absolutely stunned. The more she thought about it, the more horrifying it became. “Could Cora have been involved in this?”

“You’ll have to ask her. Either way, she’s kept a lot of secrets from me, and Skylar was just one of her guys. So don’t try to talk me out of this divorce, or I’m going to lose my temper with you too. And I won’t treat you the next time you get sick.”

“Don’t get mad. If you want a divorce from Cora, I’m all for it. But you have to promise me that even after the divorce, you’ll still treat me like family. You’ve been my son-in-law for years, and I’ve always treated you like my own son.”

Joseph knitted his brows. Helen was obviously just trying to secure his medical skills for the future. But to be fair, even though Helen had never been super warm to him over the years, she hadn’t treated him badly either.

At the very least, before he brought up the divorce, they’d gotten along pretty well. And if Helen actually helped push for the divorce, his chances of getting out would skyrocket.

So he agreed. “I’ll continue to treat you like my mother and be there for you, as long as you don’t cause problems.”

“I’m too old to cause problems. And honestly, Bernard may have a sharp tongue, but he’s actually soft-hearted. He’s proud of you more often than you realize.”

Joseph nodded, then briefly went over Bernard’s condition and the precautions they needed to take.

Right before leaving, he asked, “Where do you stand on Cora splitting from the family? Are you against it, or for it?

Helen wanted to say she was dead set against it, but considering she and Bernard now needed Joseph’s help, she played it safe by asking, “What do you think? Should I support it or oppose it?”

“So I was right! Last time, Mr. Lowell was able to leave the hospital because he just needed to stay calm and avoid getting worked up.

“This time, he worked himself up into a heart attack because Cora threatened to split the family. You brought this on yourselves. I’ve got better things to do than come here and clean up your messes. I’m leaving!”

Joseph glanced outside. If he didn’t leave soon, he wouldn’t have enough time left to switch back to his other identity.

He made his way to the garage from the inside, hopped in his car, and disappeared into the night.

Cora slept in until she woke up naturally. With a sudden start, she turned to look beside her. The spot was empty. She quickly headed outside and saw Helen sitting on the living room couch.

“Don’t bother looking for him. He left a while ago. I sent the kids, the housekeeper, and the bodyguards over to the sanatorium to be with your dad. Cora, what is going through your head? How could you still… Jeez, how exactly are you supposed to get a divorce now?”

“I never wanted a divorce in the first place. Did he say where he was going?” Cora asked.

She believed that no matter how badly a couple fought, they could just kiss and make up.

If she really wanted a divorce, all she had to do was sign the papers. But she didn’t want to. After their intimate night together, she felt completely relaxed and satisfied, which only made her even less willing to leave him.

“You didn’t ask him last night?”

“I didn’t have the chance. He didn’t really say much anyway.”

“If he wouldn’t tell you, he certainly wouldn’t tell me.”

Helen was speechless, but given Joseph’s physical prowess, it was only natural that Cora had been completely wrapped up in the moment and forgotten about everything else.

She added, “Well, that settles it. One of you wants a divorce, and the other doesn’t. You guys are just going to keep butting heads.”
