Joseph still couldn’t let go of Grace’s death. He had always felt that there was something suspicious about it. After chatting casually with Yasmin for a little longer, he hung up.

She stared at the list of tests on the laboratory form. “Kidney matching? Why do I need to do this?”

Joseph said, “Skylar’s condition has taken a turn for the worse. He’s developed ascites over the past two days because his kidneys are failing. We’ve started dialysis, but that’s not a long-term solution. Ideally, he needs a kidney transplant. You’re his sister. Your kidney might be the best match for him.”

Yara nearly jumped to her feet. “What? You want me to donate a kidney to Skylar?”

Joseph’s words had utterly shocked her.

She immediately refused. “I’m not even fully recovered yet. I can barely take care of myself, so how could I donate an organ? No. Check the transplant database and see if there’s another suitable donor.”

Joseph sighed. “Let me say something that might make me sound heartless. Honestly, there’s no need to look for another donor. There may not even be a need for a transplant.”

He picked up a pen and wrote some words on the paper.

“Pull the plug.”

Yara’s heart stopped for a moment. “Is there really nothing else we can do?”

Joseph shook his head.

Then, Yara said, “Wait. There’s someone else we can ask. Let’s find him and ask what he thinks.”
