Helen stared at Cora speechlessly before adding, “You say the Lowell family is declining. Then ask yourself honestly. Why did the Lowell family end up like this? Who brought this upon you? Isn’t the fall of the Lowell family due to a decline in its morals?”

Cora frowned. “Did Joseph teach you that passive-aggressive nonsense? You’re pretty good at it. So now you’re taking jabs at me, too? But what do you people know? You don’t understand anything.”

She decided to stop paying attention to Bernard and Helen altogether and went back to dealing with her own affairs. She tried calling Joseph, but his phone remained switched off.

Sitting in the car, she finally lost her temper and cursed him out under her breath.

That night, sometime after midnight, Joseph silently appeared at the sanatorium and slipped into the villa where Bernard was staying.

Bernard woke up and glared at him furiously. Yet beneath that anger was a deep sense of apprehension. Joseph had grown into someone with real power behind him. He was ruthless and seemingly willing to do anything to achieve his goals.

If Bernard was still healthy, he might even have admired Joseph’s transformation.

He had always looked down on the old Joseph. Joseph had been a man who lived quietly, accomplished nothing, and seemed utterly incapable of making anything out of himself. In Bernard’s eyes, that wasn’t how a man

should live.

But now that Joseph had become ruthless and was willing to stake everything on his success, Bernard found himself thinking that the old Joseph might not have been that bad after all.

Joseph sighed. “Helen already told me of your suspicions. I honestly didn’t expect you to have become this confused at your age. You’ve turned into an old fool who can’t tell right from wrong.

“Actually, if I think about it, you’ve been losing your sense of judgment since last year. Bernard, you’re really getting old.”

Bernard’s expression turned cold. “You’re doing all this to get revenge on Cora and the Lowell family. Do you really expect me to believe you wouldn’t do something to Helen as well?”

Joseph scoffed. “You really believed everything I said? When I told you a long time ago that Cora had cheated on me and that the children weren’t mine, but you refused to believe me even then. And now you’re suddenly suspicious of everything?”

Joseph shook his head disdainfully. When things had nothing to do with him, he couldn’t care less. But the moment trouble came knocking, he was suddenly worried about everything.

Bernard said, “That’s because everything you said came true.”

Joseph said, “You believed me because what I said was based on things that had already happened and could be proven. I wasn’t making things up out of thin air. Your suspicions, on the other hand, are nothing but rumors and slander. But I have to admit that seeing you this insecure is rather surprising.”

Bernard hesitated before asking, “So you really wouldn’t do something that vile?”

Joseph reached out and took Bernard’s pulse. Then he said, “The poison in your body came from the Zahn family, but you just let them off the hook so easily. Are you simply incapable of taking revenge against the Zahn family, so you have no choice but to swallow your anger?

“Or is it because Natalie and the others are of Zahn family blood, while Cora is also a woman of the Zahn family? After all, the Lowell family and the Zahn family are practically in-laws.”
