The meal was simple and light. Although Owen was old, his mind was sharp, and his speech remained clear. He asked Joseph about his work and also inquired about Skylar’s and Yara’s recoveries. He didn’t seem hurried or flustered. Even if the sky were falling, he wouldn’t bat an eye.

Joseph had prepared for this meeting in advance. Since it was their first time meeting, he was careful to keep a low profile. He made no attempt to show off or act arrogant.

After the meal, they moved on to tea. Then, without a warning, a wave of drowsiness washed over Joseph. He couldn’t help but yawn. He and Yara had already taken a short nap after arriving at Emerald Mountain. So, they shouldn’t feel sleepy.

Joseph immediately sensed danger, but his eyelids closed. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t open them again. He slumped forward onto the table and lost consciousness.

When he woke up, someone dumped a bucket of cold water over him. He jolted awake, instantly clearing the fog from his mind. However, the scene in front of him left him speechless.

He wasn’t in the tea room anymore. Instead, he was in a dimly lit room, wearing nothing but his underwear. On the bed lay a completely naked middle-aged woman who was trembling with fear. She was attractive despite her

age.

Two burly middle-aged men stood nearby. They were Owen’s bodyguards, and both were glaring at Joseph with intimidating expressions.

Was this a setup? A lust trap? Joseph had been played. He had barely wiped the water from his face when one of the bodyguards shoved him out of the room and into the main hall.

Owen sat firmly in his chair, his expression stern. His gaze was icy as he stared at Joseph.

Owen stated, “After a few drinks, you completely lost your judgment and started behaving recklessly in my house. With that little self-control, how am I supposed to entrust you with anything important? You’ve truly disappointed me.”

Joseph said nothing. While rubbing his wrist, he checked his pulse. His energy was still full and undisturbed, which meant nothing inappropriate had happened to him. It was only then that he secretly breathed a sigh of relief.

Owen was testing Joseph. Joseph wasn’t part of the Zahn family’s main branch, so there was no way Owen would trust Joseph completely.

This test was only the beginning. It wouldn’t be the last. Joseph sat down on the floor and massaged his temples. He muttered, “Mr. Zahn Senior, whatever you gave me had quite a kick. My head is still spinning, and I can’t remember what happened. What did I do?”

Owen ordered with a wave of his hand, “Have him put his clothes back on and send him home to reflect on his actions. Once he remembers what happened, he can come back and apologize properly.”

Owen didn’t kill Joseph on the spot, which meant that Joseph still had some value to him. When Joseph returned home, he noticed one of Owen’s bodyguards crouching near the entrance of the street. The bodyguard was clearly there to keep an eye on Joseph.

Joseph checked his pulse again. After confirming that no one had tampered with his body and that he hadn’t been poisoned or drugged with anything else, he went to wash up.

Not long afterward, Yara returned. Her eyes were red and swollen. She had clearly been crying.

Once they were alone, Joseph asked, “What did they do to me after I passed out? What did they do to you? We’re in this together, so don’t hide anything from me.”

Yara questioned, “Was this all something you planned with Mr. Zahn Senior?”
