A Mix-up Made Me His Enemy's Woman novel Chapter 17

Chapter 17

The following day, Diana received word that the Brannons were calling off the engagement.

“DDidn’t we already agree on everything? How can you back out now?she asked.

Don’t play dumb, Mrs. Reid. My son no longer dares to marry your daughter. If he does, I’m not even sure he would survive

it.

Emma had rushed to the hospital that day and was heartbroken to see Cyrus battered and bloodied. However, when she learned that the one who had beaten him was Noah, there was nothing she could do.

They could always call off this marriage alliance. She didn’t know why he had to beat her son half to death.

Ella came downstairs just in time to hear Diana on the phone. Her brows drew together as she asked, What’s wrong, Mom? Did something happen with Beth’s engagement?

Ella was 100% against the engagement being called off.

Diana massaged her temples. Clearly, she wasn’t in the mood to talk. Stay out of this, Ella.

Then, she went upstairs to the study.

Gary was also shocked by the Brannonsdecision. Did your daughter change her mind and make a scene with the Brannons? he asked after a moment of thought.

That possibility crossed her mind as well.

Diana’s temper flared. I’ll call her over right now!

Bethany had no idea that Noah had beaten Cyrus to a pulp. As soon as she received the call, she rushed to the Reid residence. She thought that Diana had finally come around and planned to transfer the shares to her early. To her surprise, the moment she walked through the door, Diana slapped her hard across the face.

Bethany stiffened. The burning sensation lagged half a second before spreading across her left cheek.

The humiliation hurt more than the pain. That slap was like a blade, severing the bond she still had with Diana.

Ella, who was beside them, gasped dramatically. There was a triumphant glint in her eyes as she asked, What did you do this time to upset Mom this time, Beth?

Bethany lowered her head and let out a mirthless chuckle. Then, she raised her hand and slapped Ella hard.

Ella stared at her in disbelief. How dare you hit me!

So what if I hit you?Bethany scoffed. Stay out of my business. Better yet, stay far away from me!

Diana was shellshocked. She almost didn’t recognize her daughter anymore. Why did you slap Ella? Have you lost your mind, Bethany?

Bethany was frighteningly calm. So, why did you hit me?

Diana took a deep breath, coaxed Ella upstairs, and comforted her for a long while before coming back down.

Right then, a disturbing thought took shape in Diana’s mind. Bethany was no longer under her control.

Diana studied Bethany closely. What exactly are you trying to do, Beth? Did you know that the Brannons have called off the engagement? Did you change your mind and decide that you didn’t want to marry Cyrus, so you went and made a scene? Gary is furious. It was supposed to be a union by marriage, but now our families are at odds.

Bethany’s almond eyes narrowed slightly. She wondered if this was because Silas had beaten him.

Still, she wore a poker face. We can just forget about the Brannons then.
